Spain: Thousands of Catholics Rally Against Gay Marriage, Abortion

Monday, December 28th, 2009

At a huge rally in the capital, Cardinal Antonio Rouco, the leader of Spain’s Roman Catholics, told protesters the birth rate in Europe will be depleted unless Christian values are maintained. Catholics attended a huge open air mass beside Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium.

The mass marked the Feast of the Holy Family. But Catholic leaders from across Europe joined their local counterparts and members of the Spanish centre-Right opposition to castigate the socialist government’s policies.

“Europe will be practically without children,” warned Cardinal Rouco, 73, the conservative Archbishop of Madrid. “Who denies to defend a human being so innocent and weak, already conceived but not born, commits a grave violation of moral order.”

Christian Coalition Promises Civil Disobedience if Laws Passed it Doesn't Like

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

More than 150 leaders across a spectrum of conservative Christianity on Friday released a 4,700-word document vowing civil disobedience if they are forced to take part in “anti-life acts” or bless gay marriages.

Called the “Manhattan Declaration,” the six-page, single-spaced document was drafted by Prison Fellowship founder Charles Colson, an evangelical, and Princeton University professor Robert P. George, a Roman Catholic, and included a bevy of Catholic, Anglican and Orthodox bishops, archbishops and cardinals as signatories along with dozens of clergy and laity.

Archbishop of Washington Donald W. Wuerl is one of the signatories. “Throughout the centuries, Christianity has taught that civil disobedience is not only permitted, but sometimes required,” says the document which cited civil rights icon Martin Luther King and his willingness to go to jail for his beliefs.

South African Presidential Spokesman Says Gay Marriage Not in Danger

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

The presidency has poured cold water over suggestions by conservative Christian lobby groups that President Jacob Zuma will change legislation on abortion and same-sex marriages.

Zuma’s spokesperson, Vusi Mona, told the Mail & Guardian this week that while the president has invited Christian groups to “come and debate” these issues, Zuma would nevertheless “uphold the Constitution”.

But Zuma had promised worshippers at Rhema Church during his election campaign that he would consider requests to change legislation permitting abortion and same-sex marriages, Family Policy Institute (FPI) director Errol Naidoo has told the M&G.
