Profile: Fred Karger & Californians Against Hate

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

For the better part of three decades, Fred Karger practiced the dark arts of public affairs consultancy, often on the side of corporations and conservative movements. That makes him an unlikely warrior in the struggle for gay marriage and an especially improbable champion of full disclosure in politics.

But Karger has planted himself at the center of both fights. He has organized boycotts of major donors to Proposition 8 and challenged the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and as a result finds himself enmeshed in a federal lawsuit in Sacramento over political disclosure.

California’s capital is filled with operatives who’ve morphed in unexpected ways, but Karger’s saga is the stuff of a Hollywood script. When I first met him in 1986, I never would have suspected he was gay. Few outside his private circle had a clue.

CA: Yes on 8 Targeting Californians Against Hate Founder With Lawsuit

Monday, December 7th, 2009

In a lawsuit against state election officials, Proposition 8 supporters have targeted the man who first exposed the financial role the Mormon Church and the National Organization for Marriage played in the referendum’s passage in Nov. 2008.

In a subpoena, Yes on 8 and NOM want Fred Karger, founder of Californians Against Hate, to surrender all records associated with his investigation.

Karger, who is seeking financial help to mount his legal battle, founded his organization to oppose Prop. 8. He initially went after a San Diego hotel owner who put up $125,000 to help marriage opponents launch a successful petition drive to get the referendum on the ballot and a self-storage company magnate who gave the the pro-Prop 8 campaign $693,000.

Battle Between Californians Against Hate and NOM Heats Up

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Fred Karger’s battle with the National Organization for Marriage has heated up considerably.

The anti same-sex marriage organization, which purports to be a 501(c) (4) “social welfare organization” for tax purposes but is actually a high-powered political organization — more on that later — has demanded that Karger appear for a deposition with all of the correspondence and financial records for his group, Californians Against Hate, from January to date.

NOM is suing the state of California and many state officials over public disclosure laws, and NOM apparently thinks Karger’s e-mails, faxes, correspondence, financial records and all information pertaining to Californians Against Hate will prove that adhering to state law opened up its donors to retaliation, because Karger launched several successful boycotts of donors’ businesses.

Now NOM on its website “calls out” Karger by name: “NOM to Fred Karger: NOM will not be intimidated by politically motivated harassment.” So this is obviously a punitive retaliatory action designed to “intimidate” Karger through legal means. Back at’cha.
