Spain: Thousands of Catholics Rally Against Gay Marriage, Abortion

Monday, December 28th, 2009

At a huge rally in the capital, Cardinal Antonio Rouco, the leader of Spain’s Roman Catholics, told protesters the birth rate in Europe will be depleted unless Christian values are maintained. Catholics attended a huge open air mass beside Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium.

The mass marked the Feast of the Holy Family. But Catholic leaders from across Europe joined their local counterparts and members of the Spanish centre-Right opposition to castigate the socialist government’s policies.

“Europe will be practically without children,” warned Cardinal Rouco, 73, the conservative Archbishop of Madrid. “Who denies to defend a human being so innocent and weak, already conceived but not born, commits a grave violation of moral order.”

NJ: 48% Of State's Catholics Support Gay Marriage

Friday, December 11th, 2009

A poll of Catholic voters in the US state of New Jersey has shown that just under half are in favour of gay marriage. The state’s Senate was due to vote on a gay marriage bill today but this has stalled after Democrats said they wanted to strengthen support. There are fears they do not have the 21 votes needed to pass it.

The poll from Rutgers-Eagleton surveyed 903 people in early November, asking them about their religious beliefs and views on marriage equality. Among Catholics, 48 per cent supported gay marriage, while 40 per cent opposed it and 12 per cent were undecided.

Protestants held the opposite view, with only 34 per cent supporting and 55 per cent opposing gay marriage, and 11 per cent undecided.

Catholics in Maine Give $86K to Fight Gay Marriage

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Catholics in Maine gave about $86,000 to fight same-sex marriage through collections at Masses in September.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland said Friday that parishioners put $41,000 into baskets during collections supporting the campaign to repeal Maine’s new law legalizing same-sex marriage.

Donations made in envelopes weren’t opened by the churches but sent directly to Stand for Marriage Maine, the political action committee organizing the repeal effort.
