DC: Final Vote Today on Gay Marriage Bill

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

The D.C. Council will hold its final vote Tuesday on whether to legalize same-sex marriage in the District, capping a debate that has gone on almost all year. Most members of the 13-member council have said they will support the legislation. The vote is expected about midday. If the bill passes, it will be sent to Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D), who is expected to sign it before Christmas. The bill will become law this spring if, as expected, it survives a 30-day congressional review period.

“We are on the verge of history,” Council member David A. Catania (I-At large), the lead sponsor of the bill, told about 350 same-sex marriage supporters at a pre-vote rally Monday night in Shaw. “For the world to see gays and lesbian couples equal to straight couples in the nation’s capital, that is an important message.”

Council member Harry Thomas (D-Ward 5), who also addressed the crowd, said the council is poised to send a signal to the nation “this is a human rights issue for justice and equality.”

DC: Hundreds Rally for Gay Marriage Bill

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

On the eve of an historic vote in the Washington, D.C. City Council that could make same-sex marriage legal in the District, an enthusiastic crowd filled northwest Washington’s Kennedy Recreation Center on Monday night to show support for that legislation.

To thunderous applause, David Catania, the openly gay councilman who drafted the bill, and others addressed the rally, sponsored by the Campaign for All D.C. Families, D.C. Clergy United, and the Human Rights Campaign, to cheer on the legislation, even though passage of the bill is all but a done deal.

“What we are doing friends is profoundly American,” said Catania as he thanked supporters of the bill for their efforts. Earlier this month, the D.C. City Council took its first of two votes on the issue of allowing same-sex marriage in the nation’s capital, passing the bill 11 to 2 and final passage of bill is expected later today.

Gay Marriage Bill to be Introduced in Washington DC on October 6th

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Councilmember David Catania told a group of gay and lesbian activists on Sept. 30 that he intends to introduce his long-awaited same-sex marriage bill to the D.C. Council on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Catania, D-At Large, was joined by a handful of other councilmembers expected to support the bill, including Phil Mendelson, D-At Large, and Michael Brown, I-At Large.

Roughly 200 activists were on hand for the surprise announcement. Mendelson’s judiciary committee has jurisdiction over the bill.

Councilman Catania to Introduce DC Gay Marriage Bill Within 60 Days

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Although the DC Council and Mayor Adrian Fenty are poised to make marriage for same-sex couples a reality in the District of Columbia, this advance is potentially threatened by the remote possibility of a referendum or a more likely a Congressional intervention.

Openly gay DC Councilmember David Catania [I-At Large] has drafted a bill. He plans to introduce it soon, but Catania told EDGE he is not playing his hand as to exactly when–describing himself “not eager to telegraph to the other side when I plan to introduce it; but it will be within the next 60 days.”

With 10 co-sponsors and the support of the mayor, Catania said he is most concerned with outside interests moving in and making waves.
