Defense of Marriage Act Repeal on Back Burner

Friday, December 11th, 2009

The lead sponsor of legislation that would repeal the federal ban on gay marriage says he expects the bill will remain on the back burner for the next year. In a recent interview with gay weekly DC Agenda, New York Representative Jerrold Nadler said the bill is not ready for passage.

Nadler introduced the Respect for Marriage Act in September. The bill quickly rounded up 100 co-sponsors in its first 30 days, including two of Congress’ three openly gay members – U.S. Reps. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisconsin, and Jared Polis, D-Colorado. But the effort to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has fallen victim to being a low priority, Nadler said.

“The Respect for Marriage Act is a bill that we can’t pass right now; we know we can’t pass it right now,” he said. “Some of the people we’re dealing with are very busy with a number of other things. There’s not a sense of urgency, the sense that this bill has to have a Senate sponsor right now because it’s going to pass right now, because it’s not, so we’re talking.”

NJ: Behind the Scenes of the Gay Marriage Vote Delay

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Marsha Shapiro and Louise Walpin are the gentle, candid icons of the New Jersey gay marriage movement, discussing in television ads and Internet videos the discrimination they faced raising four children. But Thursday, the amiable Middlesex County couple suddenly found themselves under a gag order as they stood in a gantlet of gay activists lining the hallway outside the Senate. Lieutenants of Garden State Equality, on red alert for the media, swooped in and politely halted several attempts at an interview. Media inquiries were referred to the group’s leader, Steve Goldstein.

Candor was out, message management was in. “Do you have his number?” a woman named Leslie said as she scrolled the screen of her cellphone, ready to provide it. She was polite, but firm, and had no intention of going away until I went away. “He can answer those questions.”

It’s easy to understand the new discipline. The group suffered twin public-relations setbacks this week, one beyond their control and one self-inflicted.

NJ: Gay Marriage Vote Delayed

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Supporters of gay marriage are hoping they can change the minds of New Jersey lawmakers who are on the fence.  Today’s much-anticipated vote in the state Senate was postponed amid rising speculation that it would have gone down to defeat. The measure cleared committee by one vote.

Proponents said they wanted the bill to receive parallel consideration in the Assembly. Lawmakers also want more time to consider an amendment strengthening the religious exemption.

The amendment clarifies that religious organizations would not have to perform same-sex weddings or allow them on their property.
