Australia: NSW Plans to Create Domestic Partner Registry

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Gay and unmarried heterosexual couples will soon be able to sign up to a relationships register in New South Wales, designed to make it easier for them to access legal entitlements. The State Government has announced it is introducing legislation to create the register, modelled on those already in place in the ACT, Victoria and Tasmania.

NSW Attorney General John Hatzistergos says unlike the ACT, the state will not provide for civil unions. “The Commonwealth has the responsibility for marriage generally,” he said.

“What we’re trying to do here is provide a simple and dignified mechanism for people to be able to have their relationships recorded, whether they are same-sex or heterosexual, and to be able to facilitate access to the family court system, but also to various entitlements under state and federal law.”

OH: Lawsuit Against Cleveland Domestic Partner Registry Proceeding

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Lambda Legal filed a friend-of-the-court brief today in support of the city of Cleveland in a lawsuit brought by an anti-gay group attempting to strip away the newly enacted domestic partnership registry for same-sex couples and their families. The brief was filed in the Court of Appeals of Ohio, Eighth Appellate District.

“To suggest to same-sex couples and their families that a domestic partnership registry somehow resembles marriage is preposterous. The domestic partnership law in Cleveland and the state constitutional amendment barring same-sex couples from marriage are not in conflict with each other,” said Christopher Clark, senior staff attorney in Lambda Legal’s Midwest Regional Office based in Chicago.

“We hope this court will rule as other courts across the country have ruled and dismiss this mean-spirited attack on same-sex couples and their families.”

FL: Legislature to Consider Domestic Partner Registry

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Florida legislators were urged this afternoon to enact pro-family legislation creating a statewide domestic partnership registry. Once enacted, the legislation would provide unmarried couples many of the benefits provided by the state to married couples.

Palm Beach County Human Rights Council President Rand Hoch addressed legislators at the final public hearing prior to the opening of the Florida legislature in March.

“Many couples choose not to marry so that they may preserve their social security, pension, and veterans benefits,” said Rand Hoch, President of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council.
“However marriage is not an option for gay and lesbian Floridians in committed relationships.”

Buffalo, NY Considering Domestic Partner Bill

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Unmarried but committed couples should receive the same benefits married couples enjoy, activists for a domestic partner bill told the Common Council today.

Two Buffalo lawmakers want to make all city employees eligible for domestic partner benefits.

They also want the city to create a new registry that would provide any couple documenting a domestic partnership with a certificate that verifies the union.
