Imagining 2011: What Democratic Inaction Could Mean for the LGBT Community

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Welcome to America. It is Jan. 4, 2011. John Boehner is now Speaker of the House of Representatives. Mitch McConnell is now Senate Majority Leader. The first piece of legislation introduced in each house in the new Congress is the following proposal for a constitutional amendment:

Section 1. No governmental or private entity in the United States shall, in any form, recognize as a marriage any union other than one consisting of one man and one woman.

Section. 2. No governmental or private entity in the United States shall, in any form, afford any legal recognition to any union of any two or more individuals which in any way equals or approximates marriage.

NY: Which Democrats Have to Go to Pass Gay Marriage in the Senate?

Friday, December 4th, 2009

The state Senate vote Wednesday defeating gay marriage, while devastating to supporters of marriage equality, clarified the road map they must follow to make it the law in New York state. The bill needed nine more votes, and gay activist Corey Johnson, a veteran political operative, says that’s attainable by 2011.

But he emphasizes, “The first priority is definitely to protect the 24 members who voted yes.” Dave Valesky of Syracuse and Brian Foley of Long Island will get the most help because they could face viable Republican challengers.

Of the eight Democrats who voted against the bill, two in Queens might have been on their way out already. George Onorato has been in office for 26 years, following 15 years as a union treasurer, and could retire (possible successors Assemblyman Mike Gianaris and Councilman Eric Gioia are pro-marriage). Hiram Monserrate was looking at a serious challenge from Assemblyman Joel Peralta even before Monserrate abandoned his support for gay marriage. Peralta favors marriage equality and is in line for major campaign donations from its supporters.

Crazies Coming Out of the Woodwork in Maine Gay Marriage Fight

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

This is gonna be fun. First, everybody get naked.

Wow, that was fast. Now, to play the game all you have to do is guess which of these comments about Maine’s upcoming ballot Question 1 are real—i.e. from letters and opinion columns published in the Portland Press Herald, Bangor Daily News or Portland Daily Sun—and which are ones I just made up to sound crazy. This is tougher than it looks. Good luck!

1) Gay rights advocates sneer at the common-sense objection that homosexual relations cannot be considered natural or normal. One need merely look at human anatomy and consider the consequences if all sex were homosexual sex to grasp this obvious and intuitive fact.
