Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Julianne Moore and Annette Bening make for one cute couple. On screen that is. The savvy and sassy redheads team up as lesbians for The Kids Are All Right, a film by indie director Lisa Cholodenko that is making its world debut at Berlin, AFP reports. In the movie, Moore and Bening, a happy pair for two decades, see their relationship start to unravel when the sperm donor father of their teenagers enters the picture.

Moore said:’For me the movie is very much a portrait of a marriage and a family and about what it’s like to be married for a long time and have children. I don’t think it matters what your sexuality is. I think all families are the same that way.’

Bening plays a successful obstetrician, while Moore is sees her career drifting and makes friends with a ladies man played by Mark Ruffalo. Ruffalo appeared in the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, while Mia Wasikowska also makes an appearance.

Colin Firth Proud of Gay 60's Movie "A Single Man"

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

After four changes in the time of the phone call and three disconnects, Colin Firth’s distinctive voice finally crackled over the line. He apologized, in advance, for any inarticulate moments to come. It had been a long day, and he had just come off the set of “The King’s Speech” in London, where it was 11:30 p.m. and he was now doing phone interviews with reporters in the States.

But you could hear him rally as he said, “I’m very happy to be talking to you,” and proceeded to be gracious, insightful and articulate about his profession and the movie “A Single Man.”

It earned him the Best Actor honor at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, nominations for a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award and — just maybe — his first chance at an Oscar.

UT: Sundance to Show "8: The Mormon Proposition"

Friday, December 4th, 2009

At 2 p.m. Thursday, the 2010 Sundance Film Festival announced that former Utah newsman Reed Cowan would bring his new documentary to the elite festival. By 5 p.m. Thursday, Cowan learned religious and anti-gay activists were organizing, discussing online whether they should gather at Park City to show their angry opposition to the screening.

Cowan’s film is “8: The Mormon Proposition.” It is described on the Internet Movie Database, www.imdb.com, as “a scorching indictment of the Mormon Church’s historic involvement in the promotion and passage of California’s Proposition 8,” the proposition that banned same-sex marriage in California.

“I know that it’s going to be protested,” Cowan said in an e-mail interview from his home base in Florida. “I just got forwarded a blog threatening boycotts and protests. … I can tell you thousands of gay-rights leaders from all over the country are going to be marching in counterpoint to the other marches.”

New Film Documents Mormon Church's Decades-Long Fight Against Gay Marriage

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Director Reed Cowan’s documentary on the Mormon Church’s decades-old involvement in the fight to ban gay marriage in the United States is ready for its premiere screening. And Californians Against Hate Founder Fred Karger says the film will “undoubtedly change history.”

While still in production the film drew fire when Cowan released several controversial audio clips in February.

Utah State Senator Chris Buttars, a practicing Mormon, lost his chair of the powerful Judicial Committee after the Republican was heard in a Cowan interview calling the gay rights movement “probably the greatest threat to America” and gay folks “mean.”
