North Carolina Newspapers Do Not Support Marriage Amendment

As North Carolina legislators gear up to vote on a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, editorial boards at newspapers throughout the state have come out against the vote and the amendment. Some papers cite it as a distraction from job creation, while others have called it an effort enshrine discrimination in the state constitution.

The American Independent searched for newspaper editorials supporting the proposed amendment, but identified none as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Lexington Dispatch argued that amending the constitution was a hasty idea:

Legislators need to use restraint when amending the state constitution. Only the most serious issues should be sent to the voters for their say-so. If passing a law will accomplish the same goal, then that’s the better path to take. Even on the no felons as sheriff’s amendment, some opponents argued that didn’t merit a change in the constitution. Similar concerns can be voiced over the gay marriage amendment. The state constitution already defines marriage as between a man and a woman. A law passed in 1996 doesn’t acknowledge same-sex marriages in North Carolina that occur in other states that allow it.

The Raleigh News Observer warned Democrats not to side with Republicans in voting for the amendment:

Just as clearly, hostility to gay marriage – and to gays – would be cemented in the constitution, a document better suited to expanding rights than to constricting them. It’s likely that in coming years such an amendment will seem as illogical, discriminatory and downright unfair as states’ former laws that outlawed interracial marriages.

The Wilmington Star News said job creation should be a top priority of legislators, not banning same-sex marriage.

The Greenville Daily Reflector said that with clean up from Hurricane Irene still underway, now is not the time for an amendment vote.

The Charlotte Observer called the amendment a roadblock that would harm business in the state:

Winston-Salem Journal called the push for an amendment by Republicans and some Democrats “useless”:

The Shelby Star wrote that government should get out of the marriage business.

NJ: Grandmother Pushes for Gay Marriage Vote

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Loretta Weinberg, the Democratic senator from Teaneck, has less than a month to get a same-sex marriage bill on the governor’s desk. And if she fails? She’ll wait. Try again. For Weinberg, it tends to work.

Her needle-exchange legislation, drafted to prevent the spread of disease among intravenous drug users, took 15 years to become law. A ban on indoor smoking, 10 years. A reduced blood-alcohol limit to define drunken driving, 10 years. “I’m an eternal optimist,” she says. “If I weren’t, I wouldn’t be in this business.”

The sunlight in her Teaneck office is strong, nearly blinding, and Weinberg shifts behind her desk, nods toward a darkened conference room. She recalls the moment she became a grandmother, six years ago, when her son-in-law phoned from the delivery room and broadcast the infant’s cries. Weinberg herself began to weep, right in front of her guests, a group that was supporting her domestic-partnership bill.

NY: Protesters Demonstrate Against Senators Who Voted Down Gay Marriage Bill

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

The wound is still fresh for gay and lesbian constituents of Queens and state senators like Hiram Monserrate (D-East Elmhurst), who voted against same-sex marriage two weeks ago. Organized by groups like the LGBT Coalition of Queens and the Western Queens Same Sex Marriage Alliance, protesters marched on Monserrate’s office in East Elmhurst Saturday and Sen. George Onorato’s (D-Astoria) office Sunday.

Although the politicians and their staffers were not in the offices, the group got plenty of looks — both positive and skeptical — from Corona residents as they marched north from Roosevelt Avenue.

“I want everyone to hear that I am not a second-class citizen,” said Sara Pomar, a same-sex marriage activist from Woodside. “It is irrelevant, my sexuality, but we all deserve the same civil rights.”

NJ: Gay Marriage Vote Delayed

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Supporters of gay marriage are hoping they can change the minds of New Jersey lawmakers who are on the fence.  Today’s much-anticipated vote in the state Senate was postponed amid rising speculation that it would have gone down to defeat. The measure cleared committee by one vote.

Proponents said they wanted the bill to receive parallel consideration in the Assembly. Lawmakers also want more time to consider an amendment strengthening the religious exemption.

The amendment clarifies that religious organizations would not have to perform same-sex weddings or allow them on their property.

NJ: Legislature Agrees to 3 Lame Duck Sessions, May Vote on Gay Marriage

Friday, November 13th, 2009

The New Jersey state Senate and Assembly will each hold three voting sessions between Dec. 7 and Jan. 11, according to the state Office of Legislative Services.

As part of the so-called lameduck session during the last weeks before the Legislature reorganizes on Jan. 12, the Senate has set aside five days and the Assembly four for committee meetings.

Two major issues looming for the lameduck session are the legalization of gay marriage and approving the use of marijuana for medical purposes.
