Queen Latifah to Headline Gay Pride for First Time

Grammy Award-winning rapper and Academy Award-nominee Queen Latifah is set to headline this year’s annual Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival on May 19.

According to the event’s official website, Latifah’s performance will mark her first ever engagement at a Pride celebration.

“From hip to R&B, pop to standards, Queen Latifah is the voice of our generation, and her concert here will be phenomenal,” Long Beach Pride Co-President Pat Crosby said in a statement. “For her to make her worldwide Pride debut here in Long Beach is a tremendous testament to the popularity of our celebration and to the strength of our community.”

Anti Gay March in Taiwan Met With Counter Protest

Religious conservatives in Taipei City yesterday beat gay activists to the punch, leading an anti-gay march ahead of next week’s scheduled gay liberation parade, local media reported.

The event saw attendance by over 2,000 members of various Christian denominations including Presbyterian, Baptist, and Methodist groups, said a report by the Central News Agency (CNA).

Gay rights supporters did not shy away from a counter-protest, with many of them carrying crosses, a symbol of burden, on their backs, said the report.

European Human Rights Court to Hear Russia Gay Pride Case

The European Court of Human Rights has combined cases stemming from Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov’s bans on gay-pride events in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and instructed Russian authorities to file a response by Jan. 20. “Our actions and pressure finally made them move,” said plaintiff Nikolai Alekseev. “It means that in one year we should have a decision.”

In February, Alekseev and others picketed the court demanding that the cases be prioritized. “This case is about a systematic denial of freedom of assembly for LGBT people in Russia since 2006,” Alekseev said. “But it goes beyond the LGBT borders and will help all human rights defenders and political groups as it will force Russia to change its law on demonstrations and public events.”

“We hope to have a decision before the fifth Moscow Pride scheduled for May 29, 2010,” he said. “Justice always comes, it’s only a matter of time.”
