Son of Hockey GM Comes Out, Finds Support

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

There is a very touching and affirming story on ESPN.com about Brendan Burke, how he came out as gay and was accepted by his father, Brian Burke, the president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Brendan Burke, 20, is a former hockey goalie who now assists the University of Miami (Ohio) college hockey team that is ranked No. 1 in the country.

It is an uplifting tale familiar to many gay men — discovering you’re gay, then becoming so miserable about lying that you finally come out. In this tale, dad, step-mom and siblings accept Brendan unconditionally, as do the Miami players and coaches. Brian Burke even marched in Toronto’s Gay Pride Parade with his son.

Brendan, who quit his high school hockey team over the anti-gay vibe in the locker room and the fear he would be discovered, said he told his story to show that hockey can be accepting of gay people.

Cleve Jones Invites President Obama to the National Equality March

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Cleve Jones, who this spring issued the call for a national march on Washington, D.C., has sent a letter to President Barack Obama inviting him to speak at the October 11 event, although that’s the same weekend that the president could be in San Francisco.

Obama, as first reported by the Bay Area Reporter last month, has been invited to San Francisco for the PGA Presidents Cup golf tournament, which takes place at Harding Park Golf Course October 6-11. The event features 20 of the world’s top golfers, including Tiger Woods.

The National Equality March takes place October 11, which is National Coming Out Day. Speakers will include longtime gay activist David Mixner, who also called for a march; Judy Shepard, mother of slain college student Matthew Shepard; and Christine Quinn, the out lesbian speaker of the New York City Council. The cast of the Broadway musical Hair is also slated to attend. A number of national LGBT groups are also planning trainings for activists on Saturday, October 10.

Vermont Governor Claims Gay Marriage Will Not Benefit State Economically

Friday, September 25th, 2009

The governor of Vermont says marriage rights for same-sex couples won’t bring his state any economic benefit, even though a report released earlier this year indicates otherwise.

Gov. Jim Douglas, a Republican, addressed the issue in response to a question the Blade submitted during an event Thursday at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Douglas called same-sex marriage “a matter of great debate” and “intense personal opinion.” He also noted that he sees the matter “quite differently from other issues that we confront.”

Gay Marriage Groups File Ballot Challenge to Prop 8

Friday, September 25th, 2009

A coalition of gay groups have filed language to repeal Proposition 8, the initiative that banned gay marriage in California.

Although larger gay groups such as Equality California have opted to wait until 2012 to challenge the ban, groups such as Love Honor Cherish, WhiteKnot.org, and Equality Network have submitted the proposal for the November 2010 election.

If passed, the proposal will replace Section 7.5 of the state constitution – “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognised in California” – with “Marriage is between only two persons and shall not be restricted on the basis of race, color, creed, ancestry, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.”

New Study: Strong Advertising Can Reach Republicans on Gay Marriage

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

A powerful and well-produced commercial can make even hardwired Republicans more sympathetic to the cause of marriage equality, according to a new study.

Released by the group Truth and Hope, a liberal grassroots group, the study looked at the effects of targeted marriage equality advertisements on a group of voters. Researchers surveyed 851 self-declared Democrats, Republicans, and independents and found that the majority of all parties reported that an ad supportive of marriage equality was effective.

The commercial in question featured a heterosexual baby-boomer couple speaking fondly of their gay son, his partner, and the gay couple’s children.
