RI: Three Candidates for Governor Publicly Support Gay Marriage

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Three major candidates running for governor of Rhode Island have promised to support and sign a bill allowing gay marriage if elected. General Treasurer Frank Caprio and Attorney General Patrick Lynch, both Democrats, and former Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who is running in November as an independent, made the pledge at a Statehouse rally on Wednesday before more than 200 people.

Moderate Party candicate Ken Block said through a spokeswoman that he also supports gay marriage.

Proponents of gay marriage believe the state is closer to approving the measure since Republican Gov. Don Carcieri (kuh-CHEHR’-ee), a social conservative and gay marriage opponent, can’t run again because of term limits.

RI: Three Gubenatorial Candidates Promise to Sign Gay Marriage Bill

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Three candidates running for Rhode Island governor are promising to sign a gay marriage bill should it reach their desk if they are elected. Marriage Equality Rhode Island solicited the promise from Attorney General Patrick Lynch and General Treasurer Frank Caprio, both Democrats, and former Sen. Lincoln Chafee, an independent.

The candidates have been invited to make their promise public at a Statehouse rally on March 3.

Republican John Robitaille hasn’t yet responded to the gay rights group. He has said he opposes gay marriage but might support domestic partnerships.

NM: Governor Richardson Asks for Swift Action on Domestic Partner Bill

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Governor Richardson wants swift action on his domestic partners bill urging the state senate not to tie it up in committees. Tuesday night, both senate opponents and some supporters of the bill talked about pulling the bill out of committee for a vote on the senate floor, as early as Thursday. Veteran lawmakers say if that happens, the bill won’t pass.

The senate defeated the bill last year by eight votes and vote counters don’t expect much change, if any. Senate Judiciary Chairman Cisco McSorley, a strong supporter of the bill, delayed Wednesday’s hearing until Friday. Insiders say a committee majority would vote to kill the bill, which led the governor’s push to introduce the bill for a full senate vote.

“It’s going to be a close vote,” predicts Gov. Richardson. “I remain positive and optimistic, but I just think it shouldn’t get bogged down in a committee…the full senate should get a chance to vote on it.”

NM: Update On Domestic Partnership Bill

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

The outcome of Tuesday’s hearing for domestic partnerships at the State Capitol could mean more hurdles for supporters of the bill. The bill passed through Tuesday’s committees but also got assigned another hearing in front of the senate finance committee. A third committee assignment generally means a bill is on its way to die, especially during a 30 day session.

But that didn’t stop New Mexicans from attending Tuesday’s hearing; supporters and opponents packed the senate gallery.

For hours the senate committee heard testimony from both sides; those in favor defended their civil rights while opponents argued the bill was a gateway to gay marriage. Lawmakers also took turns dissecting parts of the 800 page bill that would offer most of the same rights of marriage to people in domestic partnerships.

IA: Candidate for Governor Promises to Block All Legislation Until Gay Marriage Repeal Passed

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

As governor, Rep. Chris Rants would be willing to veto any bill, including the budget, until lawmakers vote on giving Iowans the opportunity to amend the constitution to define marriage. “I would not let the legislature adjourn until they had a straight up or down vote on that issue,” said Rants, a Sioux City Republican seeking the party’s nomination for governor.

Giving Iowans the opportunity to vote on a constitutional amendment specifying marriage between one man and one woman as the only legal union that is valid or recognized in the state is a key fighting point in the four-way battle for the GOP nomination to take on first-term Democrat Gov. Chet Culver.

He would make it clear during the campaign and in meetings with legislative leaders he would hold the Legislature in session until lawmakers voted on whether the issue should be placed on the ballot, Rants said.

RI: Legislature Overrides Governor's Veto of Gay Funeral Rights Bill

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

”Not being able to claim his body was certainly something that was beyond belief, was beyond human compassion from anyone. There was just no compassion whatsoever from anyone in the state.”

Mark Goldberg, 49, explaining why he pushed for a bill to allow for the legal recognition of non-married partners when it comes to funeral planning. It is reported that Goldberg’s partner, Ron Hanby, committed suicide two years ago, and despite multiple documents including wills, the state medical examiner would not release Hanby’s body to his gay partner. The Rhode Island legislature just overrode a veto by Republican Governor Donald Carcieri of the bill which had passed with near-unanimous, bipartisan support.

He continued his mean-spirited comments on the matter yesterday by sending out a letter that said the bill “represents a disturbing trend over the past few years of the incremental erosion of the principles surrounding traditional marriage….” The law will apply to same-sex and heterosexual couples who can prove that they are 18+, and have shared a life together for a year.

Maine Governor: Gay Marriage is About Equality

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Despite his last-minute endorsement of Maine’s gay marriage law when he signed it, Governor John Baldacci does not want it repealed, the Bangor Daily News reported.

At a Tuesday event in support of gay marriage, the governor said the issue was about equality, and urged Maine voters to reject Question 1.

“I think Maine people have recognized … that we are all unique people, we are all different,” he said. “But we are all under the same Constitution and we all want to make sure there is equal protection for all citizens.”

RI Legislature Sends Gay Funeral Planning Bill to Governor

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Gays in Rhode Island would get the right to plan the funerals of their late partners under a bill heading to Gov. Don Carcieri’s desk.

The legislation approved Thursday by the state Senate would give gay men and women the same right to plan the funerals of their partners as if they were married. Rhode Island is the only New England state that does not recognize gay marriage.

It would also allow the medical examiner to release a body to the late person’s domestic partner.

New York Governor Calls for Gay Marriage Vote in Upcoming Special Session

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Gov. David Paterson said Wednesday he wants to put a bill to legalize same-sex marriage to a vote during a special session within weeks.  The governor said the measure would be part of unfinished business from the regular session that ended this summer in a tumultuous coup in the Senate, later undone, after the Assembly approved its version of the measure.

“We have a number of issues that were not resolved,” Paterson told reporters, confirming a New York Daily News account. “I don’t see any reason not to address them.”

Paterson said he could call for a special session within weeks, primarily to address a $3 billion budget deficit.

NJ Republican Candidate for Governor Will Do All He Can to Block Gay Marriage

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Republican Christopher J. Christie said that if is elected New Jersey governor next month, he would do all he could to block the state from allowing gay marriage.

Lawmakers have said they expect the issue to be brought up shortly after the Nov. 3 election. Democratic Gov. Corzine has said he would sign a law making New Jersey one of a handful of states to recognize same-sex marriage.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Christie said he supported civil unions, which offer the legal benefits but not the name of marriage, for same-sex couples. Civil unions have been offered since 2007.
