NJ: No Sign of Gay Marriage on the Agenda

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

The push to legalize gay marriage in New Jersey could fail without a vote being cast in the Legislature. While the likelihood of a vote has yet to be determined, opponents of gay marriage are preparing to declare the measure dead while advocates insist there’s still time to pass a law before the governor switch next month.

Gov. Jon Corzine, a Democrat, says he’d sign the bill if lawmakers can get it to his desk while he’s still in office. At noon Jan. 19, he’ll be replaced by Republican Chris Christie, who says he would veto the bill.

Gay marriage is recognized in four states: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts and Vermont. A law to legalize it in New Hampshire takes effect Friday. The Washington, D.C., City Council voted last month to legalize gay marriage, but that law is still subject to congressional approval.

NJ: Democratic Senator Says Gay Marriage May Not Get a Vote

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

A New Jersey bill to allow gay marriage might not go to a vote in the Legislature before the session ends in January and Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine, who supports the measure, is succeeded by Republican Chris Christie, who does not.

State Sen. Paul Sarlo said he would not bring up the bill in the Judiciary Committee he chairs unless enough votes exist to pass it on to the full Senate. The Bergen County Democrat said that, currently, the bill does not have sufficient support in the committee for a recommendation to the Senate.

“Today, as I stand here, we do not have the votes in the Judiciary Committee,” Sarlo said after he and Gov.-elect Chris Christie toured the Xanadu entertainment complex under construction in the Meadowlands. “Until somebody can demonstrate that we have the votes in the Judiciary Committee, it will not be posted.

NJ: Legislature Agrees to 3 Lame Duck Sessions, May Vote on Gay Marriage

Friday, November 13th, 2009

The New Jersey state Senate and Assembly will each hold three voting sessions between Dec. 7 and Jan. 11, according to the state Office of Legislative Services.

As part of the so-called lameduck session during the last weeks before the Legislature reorganizes on Jan. 12, the Senate has set aside five days and the Assembly four for committee meetings.

Two major issues looming for the lameduck session are the legalization of gay marriage and approving the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

Push is on to Legalize Gay Marriage in New Jersey

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Following Tuesday’s narrow rejection of same-sex marriage in Maine, the latest front in the battle over gay rights has moved to New Jersey. The Democrat-controlled legislature in New Jersey, which currently recognizes same-sex couples in civil unions, is under pressure to pass a bill that would authorize gay marriage before Jon Corzine ends his term in mid-January. Corzine, who was unseated in Tuesday’s election, said he would sign such a bill.

On the contrary, his successor, Republican Chris Christie, has taken a stand against same-sex marriages and has stated that he would veto it as governor.

“New Jersey is at the very top of our list, and it’s going to happen in the next few weeks, if it happens at all,” saidMaggie Gallagher, the president for the National Organization for Marriage, which opposes same-sex marriages.

Corzine Loses in NJ: Will State Try to Pass Gay Marriage in Lame Duck Session?

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

With Republican Chris Christie beating gay marriage supporter and incumbent Jon Corzine by more than four points in yesterday’s election, New Jersey will find itself with an anti-gay chief executive in January. Does that mean gay marriage is off the table for the Garden State in the near future?

Not if Garden State Equality has anything to say about it. Jersey’s leading pro-marriage group isn’t letting Corzine’s defeat quiet its ambitions. The group kicked off a new television advertising campaign as Corzine and sympathetic lawmakers work to pass a major bill before he leaves office: same-sex marriage legislation.

In a lame duck session planned in January before Corzine exits, a marriage bill is expected to be voted on; Corzine has promised to sign it if it reaches his desk.
