Ireland: Irish Times Publishes First Gay Wedding Notice

Monday, February 1st, 2010

JMG readers Vivian Cummins and Erney Breytenback write to let us know that their December wedding in South Africa is the first same-sex union ever to be noted in the wedding announcements section of the Irish Times. Published on Saturday:

Vivian Cummings and Erney Breytenbach were married at their holiday home in Hermanus, South Africa, by the Reverend Pieter Oberholzer, on December 12th. As they spend every alternate Christmas there, they decided to avail of its climate for their big day. The major determining factor, however, was the fact that they could get married in South Africa, which is not possible for them, as two men, in Ireland. [snip]

Vivian and Erney met on Easter Saturday 1996 in Dublin, while Erney was visiting a colleague in the South African Embassy in Dublin. While there was an initial attraction, Vivian, in particular, did not want to pursue a long-distance relationship having just recently returned to live in Ireland…

Colin Farrell Attends Gay Brother's Wedding Party

Monday, December 28th, 2009

The wedding celebrations of Colin Farrell’s gay brother were a family affair last night at Krystle nightclub on Harcourt Street in Dublin. Farrell’s brother Eamon was marking his marriage to long-term partner, the Irish artist Steven Mannion. Colin Farrell was in Dublin for the party, bringing his five-year-old son James with him.

Colin’s father Eamon Sr., his mother Rita, and his sisters Claudine and Catherine were also at bash, along with other high profile Dublin socialites, according to the Irish Independent.

James is Colin Farrell’s first son, whom he had with former girlfriend, American model Kim Bordenave. At an early age the boy was diagnosed with a rare form of cerebral palsy called Angelman Syndrome. The illness causes seizures and problems with balance, and delays a child’s development. But one of its other symptoms is happiness and frequent laughter, caused by changes in the brain’s pathways brought about by the condition.

Ireland: Evangelical Group Supports Civil Unions Bill

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

The Evangelical Alliance Ireland has urged Christians to back the Civil Partnership Bill, which would introduce legal recognition of same-sex relationships in the Republic of Ireland. The Alliance’s stance on the issue is likely to win praise for its courage, as well as criticism from those who expect evangelicals to oppose gay people’s rights.

“We suggest that evangelical Christians should support the basic thrust of the Bill,” said the Evangelical Alliance Ireland in a statement signed by its General Director, Sean Mullan.

It goes on to say, “We may disagree on the detail of the legislation, but as followers of a just and compassionate God we can recognise the justice and fairness of providing some legal protection for the reality of both same-sex and opposite-sex cohabiting relationships”.

Ireland: Civil Unions Bill Likely to Pass This Month

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

As the United States engages in a heated debate over gay marriage, European Union countries are rapidly striding toward total recognition of same-sex civil unions, if not marriage. The most recent example is Ireland.Last Thursday saw Ireland become the latest country to edge toward marriage equality for homosexual couples. The Irish parliament read and debated the Civil Partnership Bill 2009, introduced by Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern.

Despite Ireland’s socially conservative image, opposition to the bill is virtually non-existent and will likely pass into law this month with widespread support from opposition parties Fine Gael and Labour as well as the governing coalition of Fianna Fáil and the Green Party.

If passed, the bill would see Ireland join a club of nine EU members that officially recognize civil unions. In addition, a further four EU countries – Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden – fully recognize same-sex marriages.

Ireland: "Family" Group Tells Irish Politicians to Vote Against Civil Unions Bill

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Catholic politicians have a moral obligation to vote against the upcoming Civil Partnership Bill that will give gay and lesbian couples almost all of the rights of married couples, according to Family Solidarity.

In a statement following its AGM last week, the organisation called on its members to remind ”their public representatives of the constitutional rights of the family and of married persons and to seek amendments to the proposed bill to ensure this.”

The statement pointed out that the Civil Partnership Bill will give same-sex couples all of the rights of married couples except the right to adopt a child as a couple. Homosexuals can already adopt as single people.

Irish Soccer Player Donal og Cusack Comes Out

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Today’s column will be about homosexuality so I must issue a warning that some readers will find some of its contents immoral, unnatural and downright disgusting. I know I do.

What, for example, could be more immoral, unnatural and downright disgusting than this statement? “Sexual relations outside marriage constituted a violation of bodily integrity, and homosexuality did so in a particularly grave manner as being against the order of nature and a perversion of the biological function of the sexual organs . . . it was important that the state should do all in its power to discourage the spread of homosexuality and in particular should not appear by the laws to condone sexual practices calculated to undermine the institutions of marriage and the family.”

That choice piece of hate speech was issued from one Rory O’Hanlon SC in 1980. At the time Mr O’Hanlon was representing the State as it defended the legal ban on homosexuality being challenged in the High Court by David Norris. He was not giving his own personal opinion, he was giving that of the State. Or, in other words, us. This was being said in the name of the people of Ireland.
