Mexico: Mayor of Mexico City Will Not Veto Gay Marriage Law

Friday, January 1st, 2010

The mayor of Mexico City has refused to veto the bill introducing gay marriage, the Informador reported. The law, which was approved on 21 December, has suffered consistent criticism, with opponents urging Mayor Marcelo Ebrard of the progressive Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) to exercise his mayoral right to veto. The Roman Catholic archbishop of Mexico, Cardinal Noberto Rivera Carrera, deemed the bill “immoral” and “reprehensible.”

Ebrard, however, has refused to overturn the new rules, which include specific rights for gays to adopt and are scheduled to take effect in March.

Alejandro Rojas, the city’s tourism secretary said: “Mexico City will become a center, where people from all over the world will be able to come and have their wedding, and then spend their honeymoon here”.

TX: Houston Elects Lesbian Mayor

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

The fourth largest city in the United States has made history by electing its first openly gay female mayor despite a ferocious attack by conservatives who made an issue of the fact that she is a lesbian. Annise Parker, who has been city controller, never concealed her sexual orientation and in her victory speech after defeating fellow democrat Gene Locke, she declared: “This election has changed the world for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, just as this election is about transforming Houstonians’ lives for the better.”

On her campaign page, she said: “Annise and her life partner, Kathy Hubbard, have been together since 1990. They have two children.”

Her victory may surprise some who see Texas as a Conservative state where gay marriage is illegal. Yet, Parker fought on a platform of fiscal conservatism, crime issues, and taxes.

Argentina: Buenos Aires Mayor Refuses to Confirm Gay Wedding, May Be Sued

Friday, December 4th, 2009

A gay couple in Buenos Aires have demanded that City Mayor Mauricio Macri be fined after failing to authorise their union – despite a legal ruling requesting him to do so.

According to the Buenos Aires Herald newspaper, Alejandro Freyre and José María Di Bello, made the formal request to City Judge Gabriela Seijas this week.

The couple requested that the court set a fine on Macri for each of the days until they are allowed to wed. On Monday, Freyre and Di Bello went to a Civil Registry in the City neighbourhood of Barrio Norte, after Judge Seijas’ court ruled that the law barring same-sex marriages was unconstitutional.

Anthrax Guitarist Comes Out for Gay Marriage

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian and his wife Pearl Aday, singer/songwriter and daughter of legendary crooner Meat Loaf, are featured in the NOH8 campaign. Award-winning American fashion photographer Abam Bouska started the campaign as a response to banning gay marriage in California.

On November 4, 2008 Proposition 8 passed, amending the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

In the wake of the defeat, there has been a groundswell of initiative from within the community at grassroots level. Seizing this opportunity, new political and protest organizatitions are forming almost daily. The NOH8 campaign is a photo project and silent protest created by Bouska and partner Jeff Parshley in direct reponse to the passage of Proposition 8.

GA: Will Gay Marriage Decide Who Becomes Mayor in Atlanta?

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Gay marriage is not on the ballot in Atlanta today, but the issue could make a difference in the race for Mayor. The ongoing gay marriage and gay rights debate has become a flashpoint in an election that could seat the city’s first white mayor since 1973. Both candidates have been pushed into a struggle to prove who is more gay-friendly to win the coveted vote of Atlanta’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) community.

Former Georgia State Senator Kasim Reed and current City Council member Mary Norwood have been sparring over gay rights and gay marriage since the November 3rd general election, trying to win over a voting bloc that could decide a run-off election that otherwise has been split loosely along racial lines. Reed, a black man, is expected to win Atlanta’s African-American majority, while Norwood, a white woman, is predicted to do well with white voters, especially in the city’s northern suburbs. But, ironically, it’s the gay vote that could be the deciding factor of this election in the heart of the mostly conservative Bible Belt.

Atlanta ranks third in the nation for the percentage of gay residents, making up approximately 12 percent of the city’s population. Gay and Lesbian activists have looked to both candidates for a definitive stance on gay marriage and gay rights.

Bloomberg Says Gay Marriage Vote in NY Unlikely This Year

Monday, September 21st, 2009

In an interview with Gay City News, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg discusses the mayoral race, his opponent NYC comptroller Bill Thompson, and expresses confidence that he can sway key GOP Senators (specifically Brooklyn’s Martin Golden and Queens’ Frank Padavan) to make a ‘yes’ vote when marriage equality comes to the floor in the legislature. He also says that’s not likely to happen this year:

And perhaps the mayor doesn’t have to worry about [working the Senators] either, at least between now and the November election.

“I don’t know how to get it to come up,” he said, explaining his view that having the issue move to the Senate floor may prove more difficult than rounding up the votes. “If you want my honest opinion,” Bloomberg continued, the Senate leadership is unlikely to move a gay marriage bill “when I don’t see these guys willing to stand up for less controversial issues.”
