NH: Update on Gay Marriage Repeal Effort

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

A New Hampshire House committee is expected to vote soon on two bills seeking to restrict marriage licenses to straight couples only. The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the measures January 20. One bill seeks to repeal the state’s newly enacted marriage equality law; the other seeks to amend the state constitution to define marriage as “one man and one woman.”

State Rep. Jim Splaine, an openly gay supporter of marriage equality, said about 100 people attended the hearing, divided fairly evenly between those supporting and opposing repeal. Among those opposing the repeal were several newly married same-sex couples, said Splaine.

House Bill 1590 was introduced by Republican Rep. Alfred Baldasaro and has only four co-sponsors in a chamber with 400 members—56 percent of them Democrats. In proposing to repeal marriage equality, the bill does not propose restoring the state’s previous law allowing for civil unions.

NH: Lawmakers Proposing "People's Veto" for State that Just Legalized Gay Marriage

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

A group of state lawmakers want New Hampshire to take a page out of Maine’s book and let citizens have the final say on laws. Six Republicans have proposed a constitutional amendment for New Hampshire to become a referendum state so voters have the “power to repeal, at the polls independent of the Legislature, any act or part of any act passed by the Legislature.”

The legislation, which will be the focus of testimony before the House Election Law Committee on Tuesday, is spurred in part by the state becoming one of five that allows gay marriage.

People “want a say on what we do in Concord,” said Rep. Beverly Rodeschin, R-Newport, and gay marriage “has created more movement from the people to become a referendum state.”

NH: Gay Marriage Opponents Going Town to Town to Overturn Marriage Equality Law

Friday, January 15th, 2010

A growing number of New Hampshire towns have accepted town meeting petitions that would allow residents to express support for a constitutional amendment to overturn the state’s equal marriage law. Rep. David Bates, R-Windham, is leading the Let NH Vote campaign and said 49 of 57 towns with the SB2 form of town meetings met the Jan. 12 deadline for warrant article inclusion of the nonbinding petition. He estimates a strong majority of the state’s 223 towns will consider the petition calling for a constitutional amendment to decide the gay marriage debate “once and for all.”

Locally, Hampton, Hampton Falls, North Hampton, Rye, Seabrook and Stratham have the petition on their warrant, while Exeter will not. Petition drives will continue, Bates said, in Greenland, Newington and New Castle. In most cases, only 25 valid signatures are required to put a petition on the town warrant.

“The public is demonstrating growing enthusiasm to have their voices heard on the marriage issue,” Bates said. According to Bates, even supporters of gay marriage have signed petitions to allow for a fuller public debate. The state Constitution does not allow for a referendum process, but Bates said the petition votes would be an accurate poll to determine public sentiment.

NH: Gay Marriage Foes Bringing Up Issue at Town Meetings

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Gay marriage opponents have begun a grass-roots effort to challenge New Hampshire’s new gay marriage law by raising the issue at town meetings this spring. Rep. David Bates, a Republican from Windham, is organizing a petition drive to ask town voters if they want state lawmakers to place a constitutional amendment on gay marriage on a future general election ballot.

The petition, which is nonbinding, asks if “the citizens of New Hampshire should be allowed to vote on an amendment to the New Hampshire constitution that defines marriage.” However, the petition does not define marriage.

Nonbinding items on a variety of issues are often taken up at town meetings. More than 200 towns hold meetings each spring in New Hampshire.

NH: Lesbian Couple Marries in Nashua as Gay Marriage Law Takes Effect

Friday, January 1st, 2010

In a candlelit church brimming with family and friends, Jennifer Morton and Michelle Morrison heard an announcement they’ve waited 13 years for: they were, at long last, married. At the stroke of midnight, the couple joined in a rousing chorus of Auld Lang Syne at their church, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashua, and then rang in the New Year by observing the moments-old law allowing gay couples to marry in New Hampshire.

“It’s very exciting,” Morton said. “I’m really glad it happened in our lifetimes. I didn’t know if it would.”

Morton and Morrison, both 38, celebrated their marriage with their two children, 150 friends, family and much of the congregation. The event was open to everyone in the church, making part New Year’s party, part wedding, part landmark moment.

NH: Gay Couples to Marry at Midnight

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

A handful of gay couples plan to celebrate the New Year and New Hampshire’s law legalizing gay marriage by exchanging their vows in front of the Statehouse just after midnight.

Mo Baxley of New Hampshire Freedom to Marry said Wednesday that a few couples plan to get married while others who got married in other states will celebrate with them.

Two years ago, about three dozen gay couples celebrated the state’s new civil union law by entering into unions at the Statehouse. The new marriage law grants no new rights to gays, but eliminates the separate status for civil unions.

NH: Radio Talk Show Host Fired After Tirade of Gay Slurs Against Barney Frank Broadcast

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Nationally syndicated radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh has long been the bete noir of liberals and of Democrats; of feminists and of gays; and in recent months has become anathema to nonwhites. But a local right-wing radio talk-show host in New Hampshire did something to a local politician last week that even Limbaugh would not have dared to do to Representative Barney Frank (D-Massachusetts) — certainly not while his microphone was still turned on:

Hurl an F-bomb at him. No, not the four-letter F-bomb — the X-rated version that no radio or television personality can legally say on the air. Rather, it was the six-letter F-bomb — the homophobic version that is as highly derogatory to gays as the six-letter N-bomb is to African-Americans.

But that’s exactly what a Laconia, New Hampshire talk-show host did. But while his radio microphone was turned off, an in-studio camera with its own mic was still on — and beaming live pictures and sound onto the Internet.

New Hampshire Legislature May Reconsider Gay Marriage in 2010

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Now that gay marriage has been defeated in Maine, attention again shifts to New Hampshire, where lawmakers say momentum from Tuesday’s vote may fuel legislation to repeal the state’s law and give voters a say.

Two proposals are being drafted in the N.H. House: One would repeal the law Gov. John Lynch signed in June and re-establish civil unions; the other is a constitutional amendment that would charge voters with deciding if “the state shall only recognize the union of one man and one woman as marriage.”

Supporters of same-sex marriage are strategizing and gearing up for a fight, said Rep. Jim Splaine, D-Portsmouth, who sponsored the gay marriage law. He said momentum doesn’t rest with gay-marriage foes.

Openly Gay NH Bishop Voices Support for Maine Gay Marriage Law

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Bishop Gene Robinson, the openly gay leader of New Hampshire’s Episcopal Church, was in Maine on Thursday to voice his support for same-sex marriage and to urge Maine voters to vote No on Question 1, which would repeal the new law legalizing gay marriage in the state.

The Episcopal Church does not recognize gay marriage, but Bishop Robinson hopes that will change some day.

No Rush for New Hampshire Gay Marriage Licenses – Yet

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Applications for gay marriage licenses became available Monday, but officials in Southern New Hampshire towns said there hasn’t been a rush of people applying.

A law giving gay and heterosexual couples the same rights under state law is set to take effect Jan. 1. The licenses are good for 90 days, so couples could apply for a license now for a marriage in January.

So far, only Derry has had a resident ask about the license. But gay couples said they are excited about the opportunity.
