NH: Lawmaker Wants to Force Gays/Lesbians Back to Civil Unions Out of "Respect"

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

“Gay and lesbian couples have civil unions. A relationship uniquely and quite properly their own. A relationship that causes no confusion. A relationship that can be respected. Let’s return their relationship to a rightful institution that is clearly understood, and that can be respected by all in its own right.” – Rep. John Cebrowski, NH House floor, 2/17/2010

Rep. John Cebrowski (R-Bedford) was the first New Hampshire state representative to speak today on HB 1590, a bill that would have repealed New Hampshire’s marriage equality law. The bill was defeated by a vote of 210 to 109. A whopping 40 Republicans voted to defeat the bill, but not Cerbrowski.

Cebrowski’s speech was astonishing not just for the raw disrespect he showed to gays and lesbians (while repeatedly stating otherwise), but also for the talking points he used. Cebrokswi used the approach and language of Jim Crow: infantilization; patronization; segregation; debasement of allies. The only thing he forgot to say explicitly was “there goes the neighborhood”. Truly, it was a textbook example of how the mindset behind racism and the mindset behind homophobia can be one in the same.

NH: Legislature Rejects Marriage Equality Repeal Bill 210-109, With 40 Republicans Joining

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Gay marriage became legal in the state on January 1st but conservative Republicans quickly announced plans to seek repeal. They introduced two measures: a bill to repeal both gay marriage and the state’s 2007 civil unions law, and a resolution seeking a constitutional amendment to restrict marriage to one man and one woman. The first was defeated in the House by 210-109 and the second by 201-135.

Opponents hoped to capitalise on the fact that gay marriage rights in the US have never been granted by voters, and 31 states have constitutional bans on gay marriage.

According to the Union-Leader, the bill’s main sponsor Al Baldasaro argued that the state should not concede to gay couples. “Homosexuals can change their sexual preference at any time,” he argued.

NH: Legislature Rejects Gay Marriage Ballot Push

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

The New Hampshire House today rejected a proposed constitutional amendment that would have barred gay marriage in New Hampshire. CACR 28 defined marriage in this state by saying it can only be between a man and a woman.

It was rejected by a wide margin, 201-135, short of a simple majority and far below the three-fifths majority — 238 votes — it needed to advance to the Senate.

Sponsors tried to delay a vote on the bill until March 17, so local voters could weigh in on petitions at town meeting that ask for a popular vote on the amendment. “All we’re trying to do here is put this on the ballot,” Rep. David Bates, R-Windham, arguing voters should have their say.

NH: House to Vote on Gay Marriage Repeal, Constitutional Ban on Wednesday

Monday, February 15th, 2010

New Hampshire’s House votes Wednesday whether to repeal the state’s six-week-old law legalizing gay marriage. The House also will vote on a proposed constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between one man and one woman.

The Judiciary Committee is recommending that the House kill both measures. Gay marriage supporters said gay couples have gotten married without any detrimental impact on society. They also said it would be wrong to enshrine discrimination in the Constitution.

Opponents said the consummation of gay unions can’t be spoken of in polite society. They also said voters should decide, not lawmakers if the marriages should be allowed.

NJ: GOP Politician Waxes Eloquent About Gay Sex – Video

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Rep. Nancy Elliott (R-NH), in the video embedded above, explains why she opposes marriage between partners of the same sex. Snip:

“I started thinking, and We’re talking about taking the penis of one man and putting it in the rectum of another man, and wiggling it around in excrement, and you have to think…. hmmm, not sure, would I allow that to happen to me?

All of us: that could happen to you! Would you let that happen to you? Is that normal?”

NH: Judiciary Committee Votes Against Repealing Gay Marriage Law

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

A House committee that deadlocked a year ago over legalizing gay marriage voted yesterday against repealing New Hampshire’s five-week-old law allowing the unions. The Judiciary Committee also voted to recommend that the House kill a proposed constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between one man and one woman.

The vote was 12-8 on both measures, largely along party lines led by Democratic opposition. Last year, the committee couldn’t agree on a recommendation and brought a bill to the House floor to legalize the unions without one. Some supporters felt at the time that it was too soon to allow gay marriage since the state’s civil unions law was only a year old. But after a series of votes, the House narrowly passed the bill that became law.

Gay marriage opponents know their chance of success on such measures in New Hampshire is slim, but they want to keep the issue before voters in hopes Republicans will regain control of the State House from Democrats in November and succeed then in banning gay marriage.

NH: Panel Votes Today on Gay Marriage Repeal

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

A House committee will recommend whether New Hampshire’s five-week-old gay marriage law should be repealed.

The Judiciary Committee also votes Tuesday whether to support a constitutional amendment banning gay unions. Gay marriage opponents know their chance of success is slim, but they want to keep the issue before voters in hopes Republicans will regain control of the Statehouse from Democrats in November and succeed then in repealing the law.

The House next acts on the recommendations. New Hampshire became the fifth state to legalize gay marriage on Jan. 1.

NH: Third Town Rejects Anti Gay Marriage Petition

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

It was a tricky balancing act Alstead residents engaged in Tuesday night. At the town’s official-ballot first session, some articles were trimmed while others withstood editing — all to balance the bottom-line budget (and the cost to Alstead residents) with the needs of the town.

The other hot topic of the night was an article to send a nonbinding resolution to legislators that reads: “The citizens of New Hampshire should be allowed to vote on an amendment to the New Hampshire Constitution that defines ‘marriage.’ ” The petition article has cropped up in multiple Monadnock Region towns. In Alstead, it was eventually amended to read merely “The citizens of New Hampshire should be.” Eleanor Elbers introduced the amendment to change the article. New Hampshire is a small state that stood up for civil rights by legalizing gay marriage, she said. The petition article contradicts that — as worded, it stands for discrimination, Elbers said.

Some residents supported the article, saying they merely want a chance to have their say on such an important issue. Others argued the article is attempting to put civil rights — something afforded to every person by the constitution — up for a vote. “The article clearly has an agenda behind it,” said Saxton, who gave a brief, but passionate, speech about how, as a gay man, he doesn’t know why anyone feels threatened by the legalization of same-sex marriage. The article will “diminish rights for human beings,” he said. “And that’s wrong and I don’t think it’s anybody else’s business.”

NH: Another Town Removes Anti Gay Marriage Petition

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Deerfield residents have taken a controversial warrant article about marriage off their March ballot and tacked onto their proposed budget enough money to buy a new piece of radar equipment. Saturday’s deliberative session lasted just under four hours, Selectman Walter Hooker said, and neared its conclusion with about a half hour of discussion on a proposed resolution stating that residents should be allowed to vote on an amendment to the state constitution defining marriage. If approved by voters, the resolution would be sent to state politicians.

The petitioned article has popped up on warrants across the state this year following legislation passed in 2009 that made same-sex marriage legal in the state. In Deerfield, the petition was submitted by Chris Tidwell, pastor at Deerfield Bible Church.

At yesterday’s meeting, residents voted to strike the proposed resolution by a 92-28 vote, Hooker said. Deerfield resident Jim Deely, 36, made the motion to amend the warrant article to take out all but two words, effectively rending it null and void. “It’s clearly a statewide, divisive end-around to try to impose individuals’ religious and moral views on others,” Deely said. Tidwell said there was no malice intended in proposing the resolution. “As far as I’m concerned, in Deerfield, it’s done,” he said.

NH: Town Votes to Gut Gay Marriage Ban Petition

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Another petitioned article on the warrant was also substantially changed. The article proposed the town send a resolution to legislators that: “The citizens of New Hampshire should be allowed to vote on an amendment; to the New Hampshire Constitution that defines ‘marriage.’”

A motion by Frederick Martin to amend the resolution to read, “The citizens of New Hampshire should be,” was approved 43-25 by voters.

“I don’t want to see the government taking away rights and liberties, and I think that’s where (the article) leads,” he said before proposing the amendment.
