Mixner: No More $ for Politicians Who Don't Fully Support Gay Equality

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

A well-heeled Democratic fund-raiser is calling on donors to stop the “gay ATM” to politicians who don’t fully support equality for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people.

Once named the most powerful gay man in America by Newsweek, David Mixner is angered by the hands-off approach of President Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee concerning a failed ballot measure in Maine that would have allowed same-sex couples to marry. He says he’s also troubled by Obama not quickly fulfilling his campaign promises regarding rights for gays and lesbians.

Mixner now thinks it’s time to use the power of the purse to influence lawmakers.

Maine Politicians Come Out in Support of Gay Marriage

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

The campaign ’No on 1 – Protect Maine Equality,’ which aims to preserve marriage equality in the state, found allies in several big names in Maine politics when a memorandum was sent to the state’s media outlets denouncing rival ’Yes on 1’ television ads.

Senate President Elizabeth Mitchell, Speaker of the House Hannah Pingree, Rep. Emily Cain, former Attorney General Steven Rowe, former Attorney General James Tierney, Dean Peter Pitegoff (University of Maine School of Law), and Professor David Cluchey (University of Maine School of Law) affixed their names to the memorandum, which pulled apart the politics of the TV advertisements.

Contrary to the content of the ads, which feature divisive language and ideas that border on anti-gay propaganda, the memo reads, “a No on 1 vote means gay and lesbian couples in Maine and their children will be treated equally under the law. By contrast, a Yes on 1 vote means that same-sex couples and their children will continue to face continued obstacles and legal discrimination.”
