Gordon Brown is pushing for British civil partnerships to be recognised across the EU – including Eastern Europe, he has told Attitude magazine. The prime minister said Britain was negotiating deals with France and Spain but wanted to “go further than that”.
He told the gay lifestyle magazine it was important to show “respect for gay people was due” in “Eastern Europe as well as Western Europe”. But he predicted it would take “many years” for this to happen.
Campaigners have been pushing for people who have undergone a civil partnership to be granted the same legal status and rights they enjoy in the UK in every other EU country.

KEVIN Rudd will move to overturn legislation passed by the ACT government allowing gay couples to hold public, legally binding ceremonies as they form civil unions.
In the latest run-in between the commonwealth and the ACT’s Labor government on the divisive issue, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said Attorney-General Robert McClelland had indicated during a recent meeting that the Rudd government would quash the amended legislation.
“They are prepared to intervene to overturn the recent amendments to the civil union legislation in the ACT,” Mr Stanhope said of his Monday meeting with Mr McClelland. “I indicated bluntly that this was unacceptable.”

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says the Federal Government is still waiting on legal advice to decide if it will block an ACT law that provides for same-sex civil unions. The ACT allows same-sex couples to recognise their relationship with a legally binding ceremony.
But it is similar to a bill the Government blocked last year because it was too similar to marriage.
Mr Rudd says the Government is still deciding what to do this time. “We’ll work our way through all of that once we receive the legal advice from the attorney-general’s department,” he said.

Sources close to Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates, who is forming a new government following September elections, said Oct. 23 that legalizing same-sex marriage will be one of the new team’s first actions.
“The measure is part of the official program of the party and according to government sources, the move will be done as soon as [formation of] the government is complete,” writes correspondent João Paulo from PortugalGay.pt.
Sócrates’ Socialist Party captured 97 of Parliament’s 230 seats. With 31 additional votes from members of the Left Bloc and the Communist Party, both of which support gay marriage, Sócrates should be able to pass the bill easily.

Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding said the country’s parliament would not recognize same-sex marriage while he was in power.
“I make no apology in saying decisively and emphatically that the government of Jamaica remains irrevocably opposed to the recognition, legitimization or acceptance of same-sex marriages or same-sex unions,” Golding said on Tuesday.
The prime minister was opening parliamentary debate on a major proposed amendment to the constitution which would lay out the scope of rights and freedoms for Jamaicans.

Socialist leader Jose Socrates, set for another four years as Portugal’s prime minister after elections Sunday, has antagonized many — even inside his own party — with his determination to reform and modernize Portugal.
But the 52-year-old civil engineer, who once described himself as a “ferocious animal” in politics, is unrepentant.
During the parliamentary election campaign he vowed to keep breaking the chains holding Portugal back, saying he will not “waver in implementing reforms, even when they are met with incomprehension, obstacles and opponents.
