DC: 39 Republicans Ask Court to Force DC Gay Marriage Vote

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Morning all. Hill Republicans have entered the D.C. gay-marriage fray, filing an amicus brief in a Superior Court case seeking a voter referendum of the issue. Thirty-nine have signed on to the brief, including House leaders John Boehner and Eric Cantor and Senators James Inhofe and Roger Wicker.

‘The filing asserts that the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics exceeded its authority by ruling twice that a public vote would discriminate against gay men and lesbians,’ Tim Craig reports in WaPo. Also an occasion for a great Kris Baumann quote: ‘The Republican Party I am a member of is dedicated to allowing local rule and respecting the thoughts of individuals….I find it ironic they would come out squarely against the wishes of the local party.’ Also WRC-TV, WTOP, which has the full brief.

FROM THE BRIEF—’As members of the District’s ultimate legislative body, amici are concerned about the extent of the District’s delegated legislative authority, the preservation of Congress’s constitutional authority, and the interpretation of home rule.’

DC: Neighborhood Commissioner Asks Congress to Force Public Vote on Gay Marriage

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Bob King is a longtime Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (ANC) from Ward 5 in Washington, DC. He is also a proponent of letting the DC gay marriage issue go to popular vote. Upset that the DC Board of Elections and Ethics ruled twice that the majority cannot vote on the rights of the minority, Bob King sent a letter earlier this month to all 535 members of Congress asking that they force the DC gay marriage issue to popular vote.

With the letter he attached a one-page list of bullet points outlining why DC residents should be allowed to vote on gay marriage. His basic argument was that with 416,657 registered voters in Washington, DC, the issue of gay marriage should not be left up to 13 city council members. He feels as though DC (which is not a state and has no voting power in Congress) should have the same rights as the 31 states that have voted to define marriage.

Mr. King also feels that many residents are not be fairly represented. ”Three Advisory Neighborhood Commissions have adopted joint resolutions, and over 50 individual ANC Commissioners have already signed on to the People’s Resolution calling for a citizens’ initiative on the definition of marriage in D.C. This represents over 100,000 District residents.”

New Jersey Republicans Call for Popular Vote on Gay Marriage

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Six Republican legislators and their conservative allies want a constitutional referendum on allowing gay marriage in New Jersey and oppose any effort to move measures approving it in the lame duck Legislature in November and December.

The Republicans and activists, led by Assembly members Michael Doherty (R-Warren) and Alison Littell McHose (R-Sussex), plan to hold a press conference at the Statehouse in Trenton on Monday to detail their positions.

“This is nothing we haven’t call for before,” Doherty said Friday. “We put in a constitutional amendment to let voters decide the issue one way or another, yes or no. It’s simple, we can let the voters decide or let a judge decide or let the lame duck session decide after November. We are going to try to re-invigorate the effort to let voters decide.”
