When Montrose Republican Don Coram cast a deciding vote Monday night to kill Colorado’s civil unions bill, he “let down” a gay community that includes his only child, his son told The Denver Post.
Dee Coram the openly gay son of Republican representative from the 58th district Don Coram, in Colorado, pitched his father for a yes vote, but to no avail. “Yesterday was the first and only time I ever called him and said, “Can you do this?” said 44-year-old Dee Coram. “He said, ‘I love you, but absolutely not.’ ”
The Denver Post reports that “Civil unions for same-sex couples seemed destined for success toward the end of the Colorado legislative session, which closed last week. It had cleared three Republican-controlled House committees and appeared to have a majority of votes on the House floor.”
But House Speaker Frank McNulty, R-Highlands Ranch, refused to let lawmakers cast their votes. Gov. John Hickenlooper countered by calling a special session. The reincarnated civil unions bill on Monday landed in McNulty’s so-called “kill committee,” where he expected the bill to die.
According to the Denver Post piece : “One by one the votes came down. In the end, Don Coram — noting how proud he was of his gay son — lined up with his fellow Republican party members. The hard-fought legislation died 5-4.
Dee Coram expressed disappointment and said the two haven’t spoken since Monday.
“I was told by my grandfather, there’s always a time to lead and there’s always a time to follow,” Dee Coram said. “He was given a time to lead, and he didn’t do it. He could have and should have been the deciding vote.”

While speaking out against ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill
Rep. Zach Wyatt went one step further than speaking out against Missouri’s proposed ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill in a speech before his colleagues this week – he came out as gay himself.
‘I’m not the first or the last Republican to come out,’ Wyatt said. ‘I’ve just gotten tired of the bigotry being shown from both sides of the aisle on gay issues. Being gay has never been a Republican or Democratic issue and it should never be.’
HB 2051 is similar to a bill being proposed in Tennessee which would ensure that sexual orientation not be discussed in any instruction, material, or extracurricular activity sponsored by a public school other than in scientific instruction concerning human reproduction.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, introduced a bill Wednesday that seeks to overturn a new District of Columbia ordinance allowing gay marriage, but he predicts Democratic leaders will not allow it to come to a vote. “I think they are afraid they will lose,” he told the Deseret News.
“I wish it would come up for a vote, because I think traditional marriage would win. But with the Democrats controlling the House, the Senate and the presidency, I can’t imagine that this would make it through the process.” So, he said, the bill is “more symbolic than it is realistic.”
The district council last month passed, and its mayor signed, an ordinance to allow gay marriage. But because the nation’s capital is a federal district and not a state, all district ordinances must go through a waiting period of 30 days in session by Congress, during which Congress may vote to reject that ordinance.

REPUBLICAN state Sens. John Bonacic and William Larkin say the same rights provided to male-female married couples in New York could be extended to same-sex couples — but only under terms that identify the relationships as “civil unions.” Both senators oppose the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York and voted it against it when the matter came up in their chamber last month. The Senate rejected the same-sex marriage bill just hours after the Assembly approved it on Dec. 2.
The five state senators who represent the Mid-Hudson Valley — Bonacic, Larkin, Stephen Saland, James Seward and Vincent Leibell — voted “no.” All are Republicans.
Bonacic, R-Mount Hope, said during a recent telephone interview that terms used to define marriage are “deep rooted in every religion in the country and in the world.”

Contrary to popular belief, New Jersey’s same sex marriage equality legislation isn’t dead yet. When the bill cleared the state Senate Judiciary Committee last month, marriage equality supporters didn’t see the votes in the full body and decided to move it in the state Assembly first to create some momentum.
But though they have the votes, the Assembly leadership wasn’t going to play along. They insisted the Senate vote first (and have promised to move the bill on Monday if it clears the upper chamber). The Senate votes Thursday.
Currently, there are five Democratic Senators voting no. That means at least three Republicans are needed to pass. Right now, there is only one — which is still one more than the New York state Senate had.

After the dramatic February defeat of a proposed domestic partnership bill, a New Mexico senator is sponsoring a bill that would ban gay marriage in the state, the New Mexico Independent reported. Senator William Sharer, a Republican from Farmington, has pre-filed legislation that would define marriage as a heterosexual union in the New Mexico Constitution.
The bill proposes adding the following text to the constitution: “Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman.” Voter approval is needed to alter the state’s constitution.
Similar attempts in the last two sessions of the Legislature have died in committee.

Utah Representative Jason Chaffetz has vowed to lead an effort in Congress to block a gay marriage bill approved in the District of Columbia Tuesday. With an 11 to 2 vote, lawmakers approved the gay marriage bill, which is expected to be signed by Mayor Adrian Fenty before Christmas. Under Home Rule, Congress has final say on laws approved in the District.
Chaffetz, a freshman representative, told the Salt Lake Tribune that he’ll introduce a resolution in January.
“It’s going to be exceptionally difficult because Democrats have us outnumbered by large amounts,” he said. “Nevertheless, we’re going to try.”

A state lawmaker is gar nering support for legislation that would block UAB’s plan to offer health insurance benefits to same sex partners, saying the university’s new policy is immoral and fiscally irresponsible.
Rep. DuWayne Bridges, R-Valley, said support is building among Republicans for a bill that would prohibit the use of tax dollars for domestic partner benefits.
“I don’t think the university should waste money by making a liberal or politically correct statement,” he said Thursday.

As the campaign season in Virginia enters its final days, one conservative candidate is drawing the ire from LGBT people for recent remarks against “homosexual acts.”
State Sen. Ken Cuccinelli (R-Fairfax), the GOP contender seeking to become Virginia’s next attorney general, made the comments to the editorial board of the Virginian-Pilot. The paper published the remarks on Monday in an endorsement of his opponent, Democrat Steve Shannon. The election is set for Tuesday.
Cuccinelli, who has often voted against gay issues during his time in the General Assembly, reportedly declined to commit to a non-discrimination policy in his office against gays as attorney general, and went on to criticize gays.
“My view is that homosexual acts, not homosexuality, but homosexual acts are wrong,” he was quoted as saying. “They’re intrinsically wrong. And I think in a natural law based country it’s appropriate to have policies that reflect that.”

A Fremont lawmaker wants to amend New Hampshire’s constitution to protect parental rights and traditional marriage.
Republican Rep. Dan Itse is affiliated with Citizens Leadership of New Hampshire, which was created a few years ago to highlight threats to constitutional freedoms. He said Wednesday he will sponsor two constitutional amendments when the Legislature reconvenes in January. One would make only marriages between men and women recognized by the state. The other would prohibit the state from abridging a parent’s right to control their child’s health, education and welfare.
Similar efforts have failed in the past. If approved by the Legislature, the amendments would go before voters in November 2010, 11 months after gay marriage becomes legal.
