IA: Republicans Introduce Anti Gay Marriage Resolution in Senate

Friday, January 15th, 2010

In the latest move against gay marriage in Iowa, 18 Iowa Senate Republicans have introduced a joint resolution proposing a constitutional amendment specifying marriage between one man and one woman as the only legal union that is valid or recognized in the state.

One of the sponsors, Sen. Merlin Bartz of Grafton, said Thursday’s move was important in that it gives Iowa citizens a chance to get the ball rolling.

But Bartz conceded Senate Joint Resolution 2001 faces nearly insurmountable odds in being debated during the 2010 session given the steadfast opposition from Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, a Council Bluffs Democrat.

NJ: Asbury Park to Pass Gay Marriage Resolution

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

City Council members said Wednesday night they plan to approve a resolution in support of marriage equality, possibly as soon as a special meeting scheduled for 10 a.m. Dec. 24 on an unrelated matter. “I think this is part of the path forward,” Mayor Ed Johnson said Wednesday.

Once passed, Asbury Park would become the fourth municipality in the state to support gay marriage.

Previously, Maplewood, Red Bank and South Orange endorsed marriage equality, said Steven Goldstein, chairperson of Garden State Equality, the organization lobbying hard for the state marriage equality bill, now expected to see its next action in January.

Seattle City Council Urges Approval of Ref 71, Domestic Partnerships

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

The Seattle City Council has approved a resolution urging voters to approve Referendum 71, the Washington State ballot measure that puts a gay-inclusive domestic partnership law up for a vote in November.

On Monday, lawmakers unanimously approved the resolution that backs the law dubbed the “everything but marriage” law by the media and passed it to Mayor Greg Nickels, a supporter of the law.

If passed, Referendum 71 would extend a 2007 domestic partnership law for a second time, granting gay and lesbian couples all the remaining state-provided rights, benefits and responsibilities of marriage.
