VP Joe Biden Indicates Approval of Marriage Equality

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden on Sunday said he doesn’t think that there should be any legal barriers to same sex marriage.

In an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Biden told moderator David Gregory that more and more Americans will come to understand “what this is all about … who do you love? Who do you love, and will you be loyal to the person you love?”

“Look, I am Vice President of the United States of America. The president sets the policy. I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual men marrying women are entitled to the same exact rights. All the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And quite frankly I don’t see much of a distinction beyond that. [...]

“People fear that which is different, and now they’re beginning to understand.”

The Vice-President’s remarks may signal a shift in public policy by the President who has maintained that his views on same-sex marriage are evolving, however a spokesperson from the vice president’s office has since denied that Biden’s remarks were an endorsement of same-sex marriage.  READ MORE AT LGBTQ NATION

SC: Conservative AG Kills Same Sex Partner Health Benefits Plan

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

On the advice of Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, a proposed state regulatory change to allow government employees to add same-sex partners to their state health benefits has been withdrawn from consideration. The suggested policy change from Democratic former Gov. Timothy M. Kaine became public in December in the waning days of his term, eliciting support from gay groups and condemnation from social conservatives.

If adopted, it would have permitted insured state workers to include “other qualified adults” living in their households – such as domestic partners, adult children and other relatives – to the state’s health coverage system.

Kaine administration officials claimed that wouldn’t increase state expenses because employees adding a person would pick up all the extra costs. But a state fiscal analysis dated Jan. 12 indicates that “insufficient data” and certain unknown variables make cost calculations problematic.

150K Same Sex Couples in Marriage Relationships in 2008, Census Says

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Nearly 150,000 same-sex couples reported being in marriage relationships last year, many more than the number of actual weddings and civil unions, according to the first U.S. census figures released on same-sex marriages.

About 27 percent of the estimated 564,743 total gay couples in the United States said they were in a relationship akin to “husband” and “wife,” according to the Census Bureau tally provided to The Associated Press. That’s compared with 91 percent of the 61.3 million total opposite-sex couples who reported being married.

A consultant to the Census Bureau estimated there were roughly 100,000 official same-sex weddings, civil unions and domestic partnerships in 2008.
