CA: Prop 8 Trial May Be Televised

Friday, December 18th, 2009

The must-see TV of David Boies, Ted Olson & The Gay Marriage Debate could soon be hitting your flatscreen. The Recorder: The Judicial Council of the 9th Circuit authorized television cameras in certain district court proceedings Thursday, reviving a national controversy just weeks before a groundbreaking trial over same-sex marriage is slated to begin in San Francisco.

The 9th Circuit currently allows cameras to televise appellate arguments, as does the 2nd Circuit. A private vendor has also recorded a handful of district court proceedings in New York.

But under the 9th Circuit’s new experimental program — in which only civil, nonjury trials would qualify — district courts would be likely to use their own camera equipment, said Circuit Executive Cathy Catterson. The method of distribution would be figured out on a case-by-case basis.

Gay Marriage Commercial to Air During Miss California Pageant

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Gay marriage ad to air on Miss California TV; In response, Carrie Prejean will respond with 30 seconds of video about….nothing. Oh, and you sick freaks thought thought she was going to air something like this?

The Miss California USA beauty pageant is anything but dull and this year’s gig — on Sunday — just turned as political as last year’s. You remember that ruckus, with Carrie Prejean and Perez and gay marriage and — eventually — “solo” sex tapes and lawsuits and quickly-penned memoirs and Larry King being “inappropriate.”

With that kind of pedigree, it’s no surprise this year’s pageant will be on TV for the first time in 15 years. (Sunday at 3 p.m. — check your local listings.) Gotta be better reality TV than Jon and Kate. Here’s the political twist: In an effort to make up to last year’s ruckus participants, pageant czars offered to donate — yes DONATE — 30-seconds of ad time to Equality California and Prejean. Equality California said yes. Prejean — through her attorney — declined.

Prop 8 Gay Marriage Trial May Be Televised

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

The challenge to California’s Prop 8 could be coming to a television near you.

Ted Olson and David Boies, who represented Bush and Gore, respectively, in that little known Suprme Court battle, have teamed up to challenge the constituionality of Prop 8, California’s amendment prohibiting gay marriage.  Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker refused to dismiss the case, called Perry v. Schwarzenegger.

Liptak also notes the judge has “hinted” that he may allow cameras in the courtroom for the trial, which would be an extremely rare move, especially in federal court.
