New TV Show Caprica Embraces Gay Marriage

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Long-awaited Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica starts on January 22, and we’ve seen the first few episodes. Here’s our spoiler-free assessment of this challenging show that’s going to take you in unexpected directions.

After watching the two-hour pilot (currently available on DVD) and first two episodes of Caprica, I was left feeling like I wanted this to be a brand-new series completely released from the Battlestar Galactica universe.

As we learned in BSG, the humans’ dominant religion is polytheistic, similar to that of ancient Greece. Perhaps as a result, Capricans are sexually liberal: Gay marriage is commonplace (one of the main characters, Bill Adama’s uncle Sam, is in a sweet, cozy gay marriage); it is also legal for people to form group marriages with many partners, and we see a positive example of this kind of relationship too.

CA: Prop 8 Trial May Be Televised

Friday, December 18th, 2009

The must-see TV of David Boies, Ted Olson & The Gay Marriage Debate could soon be hitting your flatscreen. The Recorder: The Judicial Council of the 9th Circuit authorized television cameras in certain district court proceedings Thursday, reviving a national controversy just weeks before a groundbreaking trial over same-sex marriage is slated to begin in San Francisco.

The 9th Circuit currently allows cameras to televise appellate arguments, as does the 2nd Circuit. A private vendor has also recorded a handful of district court proceedings in New York.

But under the 9th Circuit’s new experimental program — in which only civil, nonjury trials would qualify — district courts would be likely to use their own camera equipment, said Circuit Executive Cathy Catterson. The method of distribution would be figured out on a case-by-case basis.

NBC Show Looking for Gay Married Couples

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I just got this from Theresa Horwitz at Shed Media:

I contacted you because we are searching the country for gay married couples. This could be an excellent opportunity to show on primetime television that marriage is marriage – a show about married life simply would not be complete without showcasing married couples in all forms. I am a casting associate producer for a new show on NBC called “The Marriage Ref.” The show is produced by Jerry Seinfeld and will focus on couples that bicker naturally about every day issues – we will then bring in a marriage referee to settle arguments.

We are also accepting applications from straight couples. If anyone comes to mind I was hoping you could forward them my info or vise versa. The show is going to air Sunday nights at 8pm on NBC and will feature celebrities like Chris Rock, Madonna, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston. Please let me know if you know any couples personally or otherwise that may be interested in this exciting opportunity. I have included a link to the preview on NBC.com below. Hope to hear from you soon!
