Canada: Conservative Edits Gay References Out of New Immigration Manual

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Tory Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney should be ashamed of himself for editing out references to gay and lesbian rights in a government manual, critics say. Kenney, who represents a riding in Calgary, last June ordered references to historical achievements in gay rights edited from a manual for immigrants applying for citizenship, according to news reports from Ottawa.

A senior bureaucrat made a last-ditch effort to have the references reinserted into the new manual before it went to press in November, but Kenney refused to budge. The news report said Kenney ensured that two paragraphs from an earlier draft were not included in the new 63-page manual, which replaces a 1995 edition of the manual.

According to the Canadian Press, the draft included this paragraph under a section titled Towards a Modern Canada: “Homosexuality was decriminalized in 1969 and more recently, civil marriage rights to same-sex couples was legalized nationwide in 2005.” Under the section on citizenship rights, the earlier draft said: “Equality Rights — Canadians are protected against discrimination based on race, gender, national origin, religion, sexual orientation or age.”

Support Drops for Tories in UK Among Gays/Lesbians

Friday, October 9th, 2009

An exclusive PinkNews.co.uk survey of more than 600 lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans readers has found that support has plummeted for the Conservative Party.

In the week that the first Conservative Conference Pride was held, our poll found that only 22 per cent of respondents would vote Tory if there was a general election tomorrow, compared to 36 per cent who said they would vote Labour. Twenty-five per cent said they would vote Liberal Democrat.

The results are a reversal of a similar poll we conducted in June, ahead of the European Elections. Then, we found that 39 per cent would vote Tory in a general election, compared to 29 per cent who said they would Labour.

UK Tory Leader Defends Alliance With Homophobic Party in Poland

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

David Cameron has today defended the Conservative alliance with a controversial Polish party in the European parliament, insisting it was not homophobic. In an interview with Sky News, the Tory leader denied that the Law and Justice party – which opposes gay marriage – was prejudiced towards gay people.

Asked how he would respond to a letter from celebrities including Stephen Fry, which called on him to oppose “vile rhetoric” about gay rights from the Law and Justice party, Cameron said: “I’ll respond to the letter very clearly.

“I don’t believe the Law and Justice party are homophobic. Poland is a Catholic country. Most of the parties in Poland do take a stance like that on issues like gay marriage. “I don’t happen to agree with them, but they’re not a homophobic party.”
