IA: Openly Gay Senator Fears GOP Wins in 2012

Friday, December 9th, 2011

Iowa Marriage EqualityThe only openly gay member of the Iowa State Senate believes marriage equality in the state could “absolutely” be in danger, despite a recent win solidifying a Democratic majority in the chamber for the remainder of the year.

State Sen. Matt McCoy, who’s served in the legislature since 1993 — first as a House member and then as a senator — said marriage rights for gay couples could be in jeopardy in the 2012 election if Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal loses his seat or Democrats lose their majority in the chamber.

“We’ve got to make sure that we win some of those key seats that have allowed us to hold on to a majority,” McCoy told the Blade during an interview in Houston. “So we need to have a very strong Democratic year across the board, so that from the very top of the ticket on down, we’re going to need a strong ticket.”

“As far as we have come, which as been significant, we don’t yet have the kind of consensus that would indicate a reasonable expectation of success,” said Jeana Frazzini, executive director.

MD: Attorney General Says Marriage Equality Bill Will Pass in 2012

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Maryland Gay MarriageMaryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler on Tuesday, Oct. 25, predicted a marriage equality bill will pass in the state Legislature next year.

“This year we’ll pass same-sex marriage,” said Gansler during a speech at the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C., that coincided with the release of a new report on the impact of social and legal inequalities on children with LGBT parents.

A marriage equality bill stalled in the House of Delegates earlier this year, but Gansler said the measure is “something we desperately need” because the lack of nuptials for same-sex couples violates due process.

Denmark May Legalize Marriage Equality

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Difference Between Gay and Straight WeddingsLawmakers in Denmark are considering legalising gay marriage. Church minister Manu Sareen told the Jyllands-Posten newspaper that gay couples may be allowed to wed in the spring of 2012.

He said: “I look forward to the moment the first homosexual couple steps out of the church. I’ll be standing out there throwing rice.

“I have many friends who are homosexuals and can’t get married. They love their partners the same way heterosexuals do, but they don’t have the right to live it out in the same way. That’s really problematic.”

OR: Basic Rights Oregon Considers 2012 Marriage Equality Ballot Measure

Sunday, October 16th, 2011

Oregon Gay MarriageVictoria Smith-Weiland isn’t sure how many hours she has been working at a phone bank calling Oregonians about gay marriage over the past two years. “Maybe 30, 40, or even 50″ three-hour shifts, she said. “I’ve completely lost track.”

One of about 15 volunteers intermittently staffing the phone bank at Basic Rights Oregon’s small office in downtown Eugene, the 42-year-old believes that her personal story has helped her connect with the strangers on the other end of the line.

Smith-Weiland has been in a relationship with her partner, Nicole, for 13 years. The couple, who have a daughter, are active in St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. And, in February 2008, they were one of 85 local couples to officially declare their domestic partnership on the first day they legally could.

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

The group would need to collect valid signatures from 807,615 registered California voters. The initiative would amend the California Constitution to delete or overturn Prop 8, via which voters amended the Constitution in 2008 to re-ban same-sex marriage.

The Los-Angeles-based organization’s outreach director, Lester Aponte, said Oct. 11 that LHC already has launched efforts to build a statewide campaign structure.

CA: Equality California Rules Out 2012 Prop 8 Repeal Initiative

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Prop 8 RepealCalifornia’s largest gay rights group has decided against trying to repeal the state’s voter-approved ban on same-sex unions next year.

Equality California announced Wednesday that it would not lead a campaign in 2012 to undo Proposition 8, the constitutional amendment that limited marriage to a man and a woman five months after the state Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriages.

Executive Director Roland Palencia says that with polls showing voters still divided and a court challenge that could overturn the measure pending, the time is not right to undertake a risky and expensive ballot fight.
