Australia: How Gillard Snatched Defeat From the Jaws of Marriage Equality Victory

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Australia Marriage EqualityRecently, Australia’s ruling Labor Party has been fighting off an attempt to legalize same-sex marriage. The problem was that rank-and-file members, and most voters, support marriage equality, while left-wing Prime Minister Julia Gillard does not. She is quite adamant in her opposition.

She claims that she is protecting “traditional” marriage, but she lives with a man herself, outside marriage. Gillard’s rabid anti-gay position has a lot of Labor supporters scratching their heads.

Gillard has a problem. At the recent Labor Party conference, prominent members pushed marriage equality as a plank for the party. This would require Labor MPs to vote for equality legislation that their own party leader opposes.

Australia: ALP Vote Will Allow Australian Gays to Marry Overseas

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

Australia Gay Weddings OverseasTHE Gillard government is soon set to clear a legal roadblock to Australian same-sex couples wanting to marry overseas.

The Labor Party conference changed its platform at the weekend to allow Certificates of No Impediment, required by many overseas jurisdictions, to be issued to same-sex couples.

The change was contained in the reworked foreign affairs policy drafted by Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, who has been personally opposed to same-sex marriage.

Australia: Platform Change on Marriage Equality Likely, Actual Change Unlikely

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Australia Marriage Equality VoteTHE Labor Party’s national conference will today reject Julia Gillard’s position on marriage equality by amending its platform to support same-sex marriage.

But factional leaders were last night working to rescue the Prime Minister from the indignity of having to implement a policy she opposes by moving to grant MPs a conscience vote on the issue, virtually guaranteeing that any legislation allowing same-sex marriage would be defeated in parliament.

As negotiations continued last night, the Coalition ridiculed Labor’s fascination with marriage equality, insisting that most Australians were more interested in the cost of living – a thought echoed by Labor sources angry that the conference was not focused on issues of broader concern.

Australia: Gillard Attacked From Both Sides of Labor Party on Marriage Equality

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Julia Gillard and Marriage EqualityTHE Labor Party’s two most prominent gay politicians – one from the Right and one from the Left – will spearhead the push for marriage equality, as Julia Gillard struggles to maintain her authority on the issue.

ACT Deputy Chief Minister Andrew Barr, from the Right, will move and federal Finance Minister Penny Wong, from the Left, will second a ”Rainbow Labor” motion at this weekend’s ALP conference declaring that Labor ”will amend the Marriage Act to ensure equal access to marriage under statute for all couples irrespective of sex”.

A platform change to endorse gay marriage would be embarrassing for the Prime Minister, who has repeatedly said that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Australia: Time to Raise Your Voice for Marriage Equality

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Australia Marriage EqualityThis coming weekend sees the ALP National Conference. This year Julia Gillard has committed to a conscience vote on marriage equality, and has commented she anticipates and looks forward to a robust debate.

The GLRL has been lobbying for a platform change for the ALP’s policy on the Marriage Act, as we believe equality should not be a matter of conscience — it should be a matter of law.

As I sit here, writing my column and pondering the conscience vote, it is difficult for me to comprehend Gillard’s motivation to consistently come out (as it were) against marriage equality. She has been open with her atheism. She is unmarried and living with her long-term partner.

Does Australia’s Labor Left Have Votes to Change Party’s Marriage Equality Plank?

Monday, November 28th, 2011

ALP's Marriage Equality PolicyTHE ALP’s Left faction is claiming the numbers to remove from the party’s policy platform a reference to the Marriage Act which defines the union as that between a man and a woman.

And it has not given up defeating Julia Gillard’s call for a conscience vote on gay marriage, with sources saying the numbers are ”line ball” in achieving a policy change from one of opposition to outright support.

With gay marriage to be debated at this week’s ALP national conference, the Left is courting votes from the Right, which is split. The Left needs 20 extra votes from the Right to achieve a majority of 201 delegates and secure a platform change.

Australia: Warringah’s ALP Council Votes Unanimously for Marriage Equality

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Warringah, Australia Gay MarriageThe ALP Federal Electorate Council for Warringah has voted unanimously in favour of marriage equality and has called on the Government to introduce legislation of its own to legalise same-sex marriage.

Warringah Federal Electorate Council spokesman Daniel Sharp said the council saw the denial of same-sex marriage as an ongoing form of discrimination towards a sizable proportion of society -a stance which it views as an “untenable and unjustifiable situation in contemporary Australia.”

“This is a commonsense reform that builds on the Labor Government’s achievements to-date in removing much of the legal discrimination which had faced same gender couples prior to Labor’s election to government,” Sharp said.

Australia: Labor Party’s Right Wing Tells Gillard: Shut Gay Marriage Debate Down

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageTHE Labor Right has begun to flex its muscle against the push for gay marriage with the union boss Joe de Bruyn telling Julia Gillard to shut the issue down. Mr de Bruyn, head of the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association, said yesterday the Prime Minister risked losing the middle ground by allowing the debate to continue.

His comments came as the ALP national executive met yesterday and reaffirmed the party’s approach to euthanasia would remain a conscience vote.

The Greens have a bill before Parliament to stop the federal government overriding the territories on euthanasia. Mr de Bruyn’s union, one of the most powerful right-wing influences in the ALP, opposes same-sex marriage and euthanasia.

Australia: ALP President Suppors Gay Marriage

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

Anna BlighQueensland Premier and ALP national president Anna Bligh has backed the right of same-sex couples to marry. Her stance puts her at odds with Prime Minister Julia Gillard and comes as federal parliamentarians from Labor’s Left faction push for more progressive policies.

Federal Sports Minister Mark Arbib, the Labor Right powerbroker who helped install Ms Gillard as prime minister, yesterday called on the party to allow MPs a free vote on gay marriage.

Ms Bligh, who became the party’s national president three months ago, told brisbanetimes.com.au she supported legalising gay marriage.
