NY: Archbishop Dolan Says He Was Deceived on Marriage Equality Bill

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, says politicians ‘deceived’ Catholic bishops on a gay marriage bill.

While Dolan vigorously objected to passage of the bill, critics noted that few other bishops spoke out on the issue and Dolan himself wasn’t in New York the day lawmakers approved the law in June.

Writing at the blog Queering the Church, gay rights activist Terence Weldon described the response of the bishops as “muted and moderate.”

Dolan, also the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), issued a decree forbidding the ceremonies from taking place.

NY: Archbishop Dolan Brings Anti Marriage Equality Message to Panel

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

New York - Archbishop Timothy DolanNew York archbishop Timothy Dolan, who recently warned President Barack Obama about his move to stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act, brought his message to a panel discussion in a district represented by one of the four Republican senators who voted for the marriage equality bill.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports on the presentation held Monday and attended by Dolan, other religious leaders and advocates against marriage equality including Bradford Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia.

During the talk called “The Ring Makes A Difference,” Dolan said the movement against marriage equality is “not anti-gay,” but “aimed at opposing a range of threats to the institution of marriage, including divorce, polygamy and adultery.”

Catholic Archbishop Urges Obama to Defend DOMA

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Defense of Marriage ActArchbishop Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, sent a letter to President Barack Obama this week to criticize recent actions of the administration on behalf of LGBT equality, especially the decision to stop defending DOMA.

In the letter sent Tuesday, the archbishop of New York, writing in his capacity as head of the bishops’ public policy arm, expressed “grave concerns” about steps that, in his opinion, “escalate the threat to marriage and imperil the religious freedom of those who promote and defend marriage.” He focused on the decision of the Justice Department to stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act earlier this year, a move the bishop’s conference opposed.

“Now the Justice Department has shifted from not defending DOMA — which is problem enough, given the duty of the executive branch to enforce even laws it disfavors — to actively attacking DOMA’s constitutionality,” wrote Dolan, who seemed largely absent from the marriage equality debate in New York this year. “Unfortunately the only response to date has been the intensification of efforts to undermine DOMA and the institution of marriage.”
