Australia: Catholic Church Calls on Parishoners to Fight Marriage Equality in Victoria

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Catholic Church and Australia Marriage EqualitySIX Catholic bishops in Victoria will circulate 80,000 letters this weekend asking their parishioners to show the Federal Government their opposition to same sex marriage. There are currently three gay marriage private member’s bills before Federal Parliament, aimed at changing the legal definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The bishops want all Catholics to contact their MPs and respond to an online survey being conducted by the Federal Parliament Standing Committee of Social Policy and Legal Affairs. The Bishop of Sale, Christopher Prowse, said it would be a grave mistake with implications for the future of society should the legal definition of marriage be changed.

“We have asked Catholics to seriously reflect and pray about the ramifications for current and future generations of legislation which completely redefines marriage,” Bishop Prowse said.

Queensland, Australia: Does LNP Still Plan to Repeal Civil Unions?

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Queensland Civil Unions RepealConfusion reigns over the fate of civil unions in Queensland after the release of Campbell Newman’s blueprint for his first 100 days of government.

The Liberal National Party (LNP) released the action plan several days before Saturday’s sweeping election victory.

Newman had previously promised he would “immediately” look at civil unions if the LNP were elected.
The document details action on the LNP’s 4 percent unemployment target, initiatives to lower the cost of living, establishing a Commission of Audit to assess the state’s finances, taking action on the Bruce Highway, establishing a ‘Mums and Bubs’ service, recruiting more police and removing Labor’s $7000 stamp duty.

Australia: Mass Gay Wedding Aired on TV

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

When Melbourne resident Elyse James sat down in the studio audience of one of Australia’s evening talk shows, “Adam Hills in Gordon St. Tonight,” in February, she had no idea that her girlfriend of eight months, Rebecca Edwards, would be proposing that night.

Days before the show, James filled out a survey sent by the talk show’s producers asking audience members one question: “If you were prime minister for a day, what law would you change or introduce?” James wrote that she would legalize same-sex marriage — currently not recognized in Australia — in hopes of one day marrying her girlfriend.

Later that week, the host of the show, popular Aussie comedian Adam Hills, called James’ girlfriend to ask if she would be willing to propose to James on an upcoming episode of “Adam Hills.”

Australia: Senate Releases Arguments For/Against Marriage Equality

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Australia Marriage EqualityAltering the definition of marriage to allow same-sex couples to wed would be the equivalent of defining sheep stations as lighthouses, a Senate committee has been told.

The first 70 of what are expected to be thousands of submissions to an inquiry into a Greens bill to legalise gay marriage have been publicly released.

Newcastle University senior law lecturer Neil Foster told the inquiry that any attempt by Parliament to change the nature of marriage by allowing weddings between same-sex partners would be unconstitutional. “The constitutional power over lighthouses, for example, cannot be used to regulate sheep stations by defining a sheep station as a lighthouse,” Mr Foster said in his submission.
