Italy: Sicilian Bishop Says Country Should Recognize Civil Unions

Italy Civil UnionsA Catholic bishop in Sicily broke with the Vatican to declare that the Italian government should recognize same-sex unions.

Paolo Urso, bishop of the Sicilian city of Ragusa said gay couples should be legally recognized, ANSA reported Thursday.

“When two people, even if they’re the same sex, decide to live together, it’s important for the State to recognize this fact,” he was quoted as saying. “But it must be called something different from marriage.”

UK: Scottish Bishop Launches Anti Marriage Equality Campaign

Phillip Tartaglia, the Bishop of Paisley, is starting a campaign against legalising gay marriage in Scotland as the SNP led administration pushes ahead with plans to hold a public consultation on legalising such unions.

Despite the legalising of gay marriage enjoying public support in Scotland – a recent poll placed support for legalisation at 61% – senior religious figures in the country are continuing with their outspoken opposition. Senior members of the Catholic Church have already spoken out again gay marriage describing it as “grotesque subversion of a universally accepted human right”.

Now Phillip Tartaglia, the Bishop of Paisley, is organising a campaign against gay marriage. The Bishop’s campaign will include letters and postcards to worshippers outlining the Churches opposition to gay marriage. According to the Herald Scotland the Bishop has already spoken with Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister, about gay marriage describing t as “wrong in principal” and outlining his belief it is solely defined as being “between a man and a woman.”

RI: Bishop Says God Will Pass Judgment for Civil Unions Bill

Bishop Thomas TobinRev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, on Thursday sent a warning to Rhode Islanders of God’s wrath for the passage of same-sex civil unions, and forbade Catholics from entering into such unions.

“Almighty God will, in His own time and way, pass judgment upon our state, its leaders and citizens, for abandoning His commands and embracing public immorality,” Tobin said, in a statement.

“The concept of civil unions is a social experiment that promotes an immoral lifestyle, is a mockery of the institution of marriage as designed by God, undermines the well-being of our families, and poses a threat to religious liberty.

Congo: Bishop Proposes Criminalizing Homosexuality

A Democratic Republic of Congo bishop and lawmaker said Monday he had put forward a bill that would make homosexuality a punishable offence, as being gay was an “abomination”.

“We would like the law to punish homosexuality, bestiality and necrophilia. Morally, homosexuality is a deviation, and spiritually, it is an abomination,” Ejiba Yamapiale said.

The bill comprises seven articles including imprisonment and fines for homosexuals, and will be debated by the National Assembly’s committee on society and culture.

MN: Catholic Churches Getting DVD, Instructions to Fight Gay Marriage From Bishop

The Catholic News Agency announced today that all Catholics in Minnesota will be receiving a DVD and a letter from their bishops urging them to opposing same-sex marriage.

“From the beginning, the church has taught that marriage is a lifetime relationship between one man and one woman,” the bishop wrote in his diocese’s newspaper The Courier.

“It is a sacrament, instituted by Jesus Christ to provide the special graces that are needed to live according to God’s law and to give birth to the next generation.” The “most threatening” of current attacks on marriage are efforts to legalize “same-sex” marriage, he remarked.

Bulgaria: Bishop Gives Medals to Anti Gay Figures

The bishop of Bulgaria’s Plovdiv, Nikolay, has presented orders for “defending” Christian values a controversial mayor and a notorious prosecutor, who were recently involved with anti-gay policies.

Bulgarian Orthodox Church bishop Nikolay, who is known for his hardline stance on religion issues, has given the highest order of the Plovdiv Bishopric, “Holy Apostle Hermas”, to the Mayor of the city of Pazarzhik Todor Popov and the Pazardzhik Prosecutor Stefan Yanev.

He praised them for their contribution to “standing up for Christian values, defending Orthodox Christian morality and spirituality, the sanctity of marriage, family, and statehood.”
