UK: Catholic Bishops Mislead Faithful on Marriage Equality Plans

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Catholic Bishops and UK Marriage EqualityCatholic Archbishops, Vincent Nichols and Peter Smith, are guilty of misleading the faithful – either deliberately or by careless omission. Last Sunday, they instructed every Catholic parish priest in England and Wales to read out a letter to the congregations of 2,500 Catholic churches.

The Pastoral Letter On Marriage, signed by the archbishops, opposed government plans to legalise same-sex marriage; suggesting that it was the moral “duty” of all Catholics to fight plans for marriage equality.

Mischievously, their letter did not make it clear that the government was proposing to allow gay couples to marry only in a civil ceremony in a register office – not in places of worship. Whether by intention or default, the fact that churches would not be forced to conduct same-sex marriages was not made clear.

No Surprise: Pope Condemns Marriage Equality

Friday, March 9th, 2012

The VaticanPope Benedict XVI condemned gay marriage on Friday in a speech to bishops from the United States after the US state of Maryland last week became the eighth in the nation to legalise same-sex unions.

“Sexual differences cannot be dismissed as irrelevant to the definition of marriage,” the pope said, warning against “the powerful political and cultural currents seeking to alter the legal definition of marriage.”

“Marriage and the family are institutions that must be promoted and defended from every possible misrepresentation of their true nature,” he said. He also said bishops could not overlook “the serious pastoral problem presented by the widespread practice of cohabitation.”

Philippine Catholic Bishops Meet to Plot Anti Marriage Equality Strategy

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Philippine Catholic bishops will convene soon to map out a campaign to bolster Pope Benedict XVI’s stand against same-sex marriages.

“It is expected of us … to likewise oppose any plan to legalize same sex ‘marriage’ in this country,” said Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines president Jose Palma in an article posted Wednesday night on the Union of Catholic Asian News website.

The announcement was made during the installation of new Capiz Archbishop Jose Advincula. Although there was no specified date for the meeting, he said the bishops will have to meet soon following Benedict XVI’s recent strong comments against gay unions.

UK: Church of England Bishops Call Gay Rights “Dangerous”

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Church of EnglandGay rights laws are eroding Christianity and stifling free speech, Church of England bishops warned yesterday. Senior clerics, including former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey, spoke out ahead of a High Court ‘clash of rights’ hearing over whether Christians are fit to foster or adopt children.

The test case starting today involves a couple who say they have been barred from fostering because they refuse to give up their religious belief that homosexuality is unacceptable. Supporters hope their legal challenge will set a precedent for the rights of Christians to foster children without compromising their faith.

But senior bishops fear that if the ruling goes against them, it could have devastating consequences for those with religious beliefs. Either way, they believe the case will determine whether Christians can continue to express their beliefs in this country.

Ireland to Go Ahead With Civil Partnership Bill in Face of Church Opposition

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

CIVIL partnership laws will be put in place in the face of protests from senior bishops, Taoiseach Brian Cowen insisted yesterday. Green Party leader John Gormley and Justice Minister Dermot Ahern have already dismissed claims from the bishops that the Civil Partnership Bill may be unconstitutional.

The Catholic Church has already called for TDs to be allowed a free vote on the issue.

Mr Ahern is to bring the legislation, which stops short of full gay marriage, before the Dail next month but it could be the autumn before it becomes law. It sets out a legal safety net on rights for same-sex couples living in long-term relationships.

Ireland: Government Ministers Rebuff Bishops on Civil Partnerships

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

TWO GOVERNMENT Ministers have dismissed claims from the bishops that the Civil Partnership Bill may be unconstitutional, while human rights groups have challenged the opposition of the Catholic bishops to the measure.

A spokesman for Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern said he had stated time and again that the Bill has been carefully drafted, on the advice of the Attorney General, to ensure that it does not undermine the constitutional position of marriage. He added that the provision of civil partnership for same-sex couples is a civil rights issue and is supported by all parties in the Oireachtas.

Mr Ahern also said there were no proposals to allow a free vote on “this important legislation”.

Ireland: Bishops Push for Religious Exemption for Registrars

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Irish Catholic bishops last night intensified their uncompromising campaign to persuade politicians to dilute plans to give gay couples similar legal status to husbands and wives. In a hard-hitting statement issued at the end of their three day meeting in Maynooth, the Irish Bishops’ Conference revealed the strength of their opposition to the Civil Partnership Bill.

Specifically, the bishops called on the Government to amend its controversial proposal to allow registrars of civil marriage to refuse to record same-sex unions on conscientious grounds.

The bill, if passed in its present form, would impose a fine and or imprisonment of registrars who act in accordance with their conscience on the matter of same-sex unions.

Episcopal Bishops Hear Reports For and Against Marriage Equality

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Two years ago The Episcopal Church House of Bishops asked a panel of eight theologians, four “conservative” and four “liberal,” to produce a study document addressing the issue of same-sex marriage. The Rev. Dr. Grant LeMarquand, Trinity’s Academic Dean, was one of the theologians on that committee. Their work is now done.

Along with Dr. Willis Jenkins of Yale, Grant went to the Spring 2010 meeting of the House of Bishops to present the work of the panel. Both Willis and Grant gave ten minute presentations summarizing the two positions, for and against same-sex marriage. The bishops then discussed among themselves in table groups following which there was an hour for the bishops to ask questions.

Perhaps the most interesting thing which happened during that question period was a short speech by Gene Robinson, Bishop of New Hampshire, who expressed dissatisfaction with both papers and stated that it was time to move beyond speaking simply of “GLBT” (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered) orientations: “there are so many other letters in the alphabet,” he said; “there are so many other sexualities to be explored.”
