Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Brazil’s national association of doctors has approved new rules for in-vitro fertilization that let same-sex couples and single people qualify for the process.

A statement from the organization says that the change “was a demand of modern society.” The rules published Thursday replace guidelines that were in place for nearly two decades.

Brazil: Gay Couples Entitled to Spousal Social Security Benefits

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Gay BrazilThe Brazilian government says gay couples in a stable relationship are entitled to the same social security pension benefits enjoyed by heterosexual couples.

The Social Security Ministry says in a Friday statement that the gay spouse of a retiree who dies will now be able to receive the pension payments once received by his or her companion. The policy covers formally registered workers who pay monthly social security fees.

Same-sex marriages are not recognized in Brazil, but 10 years ago a court in the state of Rio Grande do Sul granted same-sex couples inheritance rights and allowed them to add their partners to health insurance and retirement plans.

Brazil: Murders of Gay Men on the Rise

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Murders of gays in Brazil have jumped 62 per cent between 2007 and 2009, making the country one of the most perilous in the world for homosexuals, a gay rights association said. The Gay Group of Bahia told the newspaper O Globo the shocking statistic should be a key issue in second-round presidential elections taking place October 31, alongside abortion and gay marriages.

It said 198 gay murders were recorded in 2009, 187 in 2008, and 121 in 2007. By comparison, there were just 35 gay murders registered in Mexico last year, the group added.

Between 1980 and 2009, the association counted 3,196 murders of homosexuals in Brazil, or an average of 110 per year. It criticized opposition by church groups to a draft law that would criminalize homophobia.

Being Gay in Brazil

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

As a heterosexual living in Brazil, I’d like to note some of the differences I’ve observed in terms of how gays are treated in the US and in Brazil. Maybe some who now live in the US will decide to visit Brazil and perhaps even retire here.

1). On October 10, 2010, the city of Rio de Janeiro will host the largest annual gay pride parade.

The 2010 Rio Gay Pride Parade expects 2 million people for its 15th edition on October 10th. Spring temperature in the 80′s, packed beaches and low prices for airfare and hotels, make it the right time to visit the Cidade Maravilhosa. Learn more about the Parade and its history. The Gay Pride Parade has become a tourist attraction for visitors, gay and straight, from all over the world.

Brazil: 51% Oppose Gay Adoption, 39% Support It, New Poll Says

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Half of people in Brazil oppose allowing gay couples to adopt children, according to a poll by Datafolha published in Folha de Sao Paulo. 51 per cent of respondents share this opinion, while 39 per cent disagree.

In April, the Superior Court of Justice of Brazil issued what it called “a historic” ruling which allowed a lesbian couple to retain custody of two girls that one of the partners had adopted. While the unanimous ruling does not mean that Brazilian states have to permit adoptions by same-sex couples, it sets a precedent for future decisions and prevents legislation that would directly ban these adoptions.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has long voiced supports for same-sex civil unions, but legislators have voted down initiatives that would allow them.
