NOM Bus Tour, The Sequel: 1 Person Shows Up for Stop in Riverside, CA

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

NOM Bus TourThe Courage Campaign’s Prop 8 Trial Tracker reports that yesterday’s launch of NOM’s latest bus tour is another laughable failure.

Only one stop into The Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles “Vota Tus Valores” bus tour (vote your values, for those who don’t speak Spanish), sponsored by the National Organization for Marriage, and we’re already questioning whether to take these folks seriously. The tour bus arrived 15 minutes late to the Park at Riverwalk, which could have caused confusion if anybody had bothered to come (or if the tour had actually taken the time to invite people).

There was no setup for speakers, just Spanish music blaring from the bus, a few organizers handing out literature and an opportunity to be interviewed by a Univision reporter who was forced to guess the location after poor directions from the organizing staff.

WI: NOM Tour Draws Largest Crowd Yet – 54 People

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) saw its largest crowd yet Tuesday in Madison, Wisconsin, but counter demonstrators continued to outnumber NOM supporters. In its tenth stop, officials behind NOM’s Summer for Marriage Tour 2010 walled off hundreds of demonstrators from their rally. One head count put NOM supporters at about 54 and counter protesters at 466.

This after NOM supporters were outnumbered Monday in Indianapolis, Indiana 3 to 1. Other stops have been equally sparse, some with as few as 20 supporters.

The mood turned somber in Indianapolis when a sign calling for violence against gay men and lesbians was spotted in the crowd.

Is NOM Tour An Excuse to Draw Counter-Protesters, Show How Angry The Gays Are?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has embarked on a 23 state Summer For Marriage bus tour, taking its traditional marriage, anti-gay message on the road to spread the word of what a big, bad threat gay marriage is to society. Unfortunately, society seems to be less than enthused given that supporters at these rallies have been, well, fairly thin on the ground, with gay rights advocates outnumbering NOM supporters 3-1 or more. But could this be just what NOM wants? Conspiracy theorists, here’s one for you.

The Summer for Marriage tour has been perceived as going so badly for NOM, in fact, that some have started to suspect that there may be an ulterior motive behind it.

Fred Sainz, the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) vice president of communications, alleges in an article on the HRC’s website that NOM is actually using the tour to draw out gay rights protesters, hoping therein to use confrontations that may or may not have occurred at the events so that they can add to their alleged nationwide plan to evade public disclosure laws and keep hidden their political activities.

IN: NOM Rally Attendee Wants to Lynch the Gays

Monday, July 26th, 2010

NOM Rally Sign in IndianaThe National Organization for Marriage’s “One Man, One Woman” bus tour hit Indianapolis today and the LGBT community came out to greet them. Since we’re hospitable Hoosiers, of course, our welcome wagon outnumbered the small dog and pony show put on by NOM and local religious right groups.

Over 250 LGBT and allied folks protested the rally, but only 40 fundies showed up. At least 10 of the anti-marriage equality crowd were NOM staff or local speakers; the rest of the group were older Caucasians and skewed slightly female.

One older attendee held this sign and the Courage Campaign, there to document the entire tour, got an interview with the man. It’s included after the jump with another photo of the guy with the sign.

MD: NOM Rally Draws 25 People; Police Throw Courage Campaign Videographer Out

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

NOM Rally Annapolis MarylandJust a few minutes ago (shortly before 1 p.m. ET), Brian Brown had police officers remove the Courage Campaign’s NOM Tour Tracker videographer from the Maryland NOM rally – or risk arrest.

We were told that all counter-protesters must remain across the street. When I explained to the officers – who became enraged as I started videotaping his explanation – that we were not counter-protesters, that we had no signs, were leading no chants and were merely documenting the rally, they said that it didn’t matter.

Maybe Brown is concerned about our work documenting the rally because, yet again, the turnout today for the NOM rally in Annapolis was extremely low (about 25 people, including staff, but I’ll get a hand-count out later), even lower than previous events on NOM’s “Summer for Marriage: One Man, One Woman” tour. Stay tuned. . . we’ve got film of our videographer being removed from the rally coming soon.

NJ: NOM Protest/Counterprotest Moves to Trenton

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Gay marriage supporters and opponents protested outside New Jersey’s statehouse yesterday as they prepared to battle the issue in the Supreme Court. The US state allows civil unions but gay rights groups have appealed to the Supreme Court to allow full marriage equality.

Tuesday’s protest was originally organised by the anti-gay National Organisation for Marriage (NOM) but the state’s largest gay group, Garden State Equality, organised a counter protest. The two groups kept their distance, although NOM was dwarfed by the larger pro-gay demonstration.

A gay marriage bill failed by 20 votes to 14 in January and new governor Chris Christie is on record as being against same-sex marriage. In March, six gay couples who have had civil unions appealed to the Supreme Court to grant full equality.

Courage Campaign Website Tracking NOM Anti Gay Marriage Tour

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Courage Campaign Equality launches website to counter National Organization for Marriage’s (NOM) anti-gay propaganda tour. As NOM’s 23-stop “Summer for Marriage” bus tour begins, marriage equality advocates vow to “expose the right-wing’s lies” about LGBT families at www.NOMTourTracker.com.

LOS ANGELES — As the hate group National Organization for Marriage’s (NOM) begins its month-long anti-gay bus tour of 16 eastern and Midwestern states, leading progressive advocacy organization Courage Campaign Equality has announced the launch of NOMTourTracker.com – an interactive blog that will include photos, videos, interviews and on the ground updates from each NOM tour stop, as well as pro-equality counter events. The tour will culminate in Washington D.C. on August 15th.

“With the Defense of Marriage Act declared unconstitutional and NOM’s allies telling Prop. 8 Federal Trial Judge Vaughn Walker they ‘don’t have any evidence’ to support second class citizenship for millions of Americans, NOM’s desperate, pro-bigotry propaganda tour will not go unanswered,” said Courage Campaign founder and chairman Rick Jacobs. “NOMtourtracker.com will expose the right wing’s homophobic lies and tell the true stories both of the loving families across our country seeking equality under the law and the communities who support them.”

NY: Albany Hosts Another Tiny NOM Rally

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

NOM Rally in Albany, NYKeep documenting; keep taking the pictures. Keep people informed as to the truth of the “NOM Summer Of Marriage 2010″ trainwreck bus tour, folks. From my friend John comes these photos via Facebook. Pretty sparse crowd, far worst showing yet I believe.

While the early speakers address the “crowd”, a larger and completely silent group of protesters arrive with rainbow colored umbrellas- and rather than engage directly, they placed themselves behind the podium with their backs to the speakers.

Naturally the local police were immediately called- maybe by Brian Brown himself, who is ever frightened and utterly terrified of Teh Evil Gayz. So Albany P.D. arrived, spoke with the leader of the counter protest, and then allowed the protesters to stay- remaining there themselves, as silent witnesses to NOM’s handful of speakers and their spew.

NY: Yet Another NOM Stop, Another Tiny Crowd Gathers

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

NOM Albany Rally/CpunterprotestWow. You’ve got to hand it to the equality movement. Our collective response to the NOM Tour just keeps getting better and better with each tour stop.

First, the Equality Maine and GLAD organizers of the Maine counter-rally to NOM actually attracted more people to their event than NOM’s kickoff event on Wednesday (102 to 76 by our hand-count). Then the New Hampshire counter-rally organizers held a brilliant “silent witness” event across the street from the Manchester event on Thursday.

And now the amazing Albany organizers, led by several wonderful organizations, have taken counter-protesting to a whole new level, surrounding the NOM event with one of the most brilliant actions I have ever seen.
