Canada: Liberals Warn of Danger to Marriage Equality

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Canada Marriage EqualityJean Chretien is warning Liberals that gun control and the Kyoto accord are dead because of Stephen Harper’s Tories, darkly noting that same-sex marriage and abortion rights could be next on the Conservative government’s chopping block. He even raises the return of the death penalty as a possibility.

=”Unless we are bold. Unless we seize the moment. Everything we built will start being chipped away,” the former prime minister writes in a toughly-worded fundraising letter. “The Conservatives have already ended gun control and Kyoto. Next may be a woman’s right to choose, or gay marriage. Then might come capital punishment. And one by one, the values we cherish as Canadians will be gone.”

This new Liberal fundraising effort hits some hot button issues – it doesn’t end there.

New Map: Canadian Support for Marriage Equality

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Canadians on Gay Marriage MapThe more yellow an area is, the greater the opposition to same-sex marriage. The reverse is true for gray areas. Keep in mind that some of the huge areas that appear to be largely anti-gay are virtually unpopulated.

Is the Conservative Party Ushering Homophobia Back into Canada?

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Homophobia in CanadaCanada has often boasted giving the LGBT community more equal rights than many other countries in the world. Gay and Lesbian Canadians have the right to get married, serve in the military, adopt children, and live their lives in peace and harmony. This is the reason I have always been proud to be Canadian and to live in a country that is so LGBT-friendly.

Unfortunately, even though Canada has been advanced in the acceptance of its LGBT community, homophobia and discrimination still exist. During the last few months, I have asked myself, “Is Canada about to lose its LGBT-friendly reputation?”

During the most recent federal election, Canadians elected the Conservative party to be the Majority Government of Canada. By doing so, they may have set LGBT rights back several years. Unfortunately, the Conservative track record for supporting the LGBT community is non-existent. Thoroughout Canadian history, the Conservatives have never supported any legislation that furthered LGBT causes. The fact is, the party has always fought to have LGBT rights taken away.

Canada; PM Harper Promises to Leave Marriage Equality Alone if Given Majority

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Prime Minister HarperPrime Minister Stephen Harper is seeking to allay concerns about what he would do with a majority, pledging Monday he has no secret agenda to ban abortions or same-sex marriage.

The spectre of a secret agenda arose in the campaign after a poll showed the Conservatives opening up a 14-point lead over the Liberals and as the prime minister called for the abolition of the long-gun registry.

Asked by a reporter if that meant he might revive other issues that are hot buttons for many in his party, including abortion rights and same-sex marriage, Harper said he has no intention of doing so.

New Canadian Citizenship Guide Restores Marriage Equality Information

Monday, March 14th, 2011

New Canadians learn about forced marriage, gay marriage and more about the War of 1812 in the latest edition of the Conservative government’s citizenship guide.

The handbook, released Monday, is designed to equip people preparing for their citizenship test with a solid background in Canada’s history, institutions and values.

When the first edition of Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship came out in 2009, it raised eyebrows on two fronts: It was far more robust in celebrating the role of the Queen and in promoting Canadian history and patriotism than were previous guides. This, on the whole, was seen as a positive development, though some on the left smelled conservative revisionism in the rewrite.

Canada: House of Commons Passes Transgender Rights Bill

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Early in the day on February 9th, 2011, a press release entitled Ontario Federation of Labour Calls on Federal Members of Parliament to Support Bill C-389 to Enshrine Trans Human Rights was published. From the press release:

As Private Members’ Bill C-389, An Act to Amend the Canadian Human Rights Act and Criminal Code (gender identity and gender expression), is put to third and final reading today, the Ontario Federation of Labour is calling on all members of parliament to vote in favour of the bill to protect the rights of trans-identified Canadians.

“This bill is about extending human rights to some of the most vulnerable among us,” said Sid Ryan, President of the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL). “Denying the rights of some has never protected our society and has always undermined our integrity. It is past time that we extend human rights and criminal code protections to trans-identified people.”

Canada Celebrates 10th Anniversary of First Gay Marriage

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Two same-sex Canadian couples who made international headlines and North American history by being the first to be legally married, will renew their vows, along with 50 others, in a 10th-anniversary celebration Friday.

Joe Varnell and Kevin Bourassa, along with Anne and Elaine Vautour, were the first same-sex couples to be married in Toronto at Riverdale’s Metropolitan Community Church on Jan. 14, 2001.

Since then, same-sex marriage has been upheld as a constitutional right across Canada. It has also become legal in several other countries and states.

Saskatchewan May Try to Thwart Court Ruling on Marriage Commissioners

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Saskatchewan RulingJustice Minister Don Morgan says the Saskatchewan Party government may consider another way of accommodating the religious beliefs of marriage commissioners who continue to refuse same-sex unions.

His comments come despite a unanimous Court of Appeal decision released Monday that ruled it unconstitutional for marriage commissioners to turn away gay couples seeking their services.

The court rejected both of the proposed laws the province had referred to the court for an opinion – one that allowed an exemption for all marriage commissioners and another that just exempted commissioners hired before gay marriage was legalized in 2004.

Canada: Saskatchewan Court to Rule on Commissioner Who Refuses to Marry Gay Couples

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal is to release its opinion Monday on the thorny issue of what to do when a marriage commissioner says “I don’t” to gay couples seeking wedding services.

Five judges of the province’s top court have been mulling over the constitutional question since May. Two days were spent hearing legal arguments examining the religious rights of marriage commissioners and the equality rights of same-sex couples.

“The case is significant on the very issue itself,” noted John Whyte, a constitutional expert and former provincial deputy justice minister, in a recent interview. “The case also opens the door – a much wider door – on the question of accommodation of religious needs.”
