In the last week, Dunn has been disinvited to big Republican dinners in Whatcom and Franklin counties, and faces a new conservative rival in the attorney-general’s race.

“That’s the name of the game. There has been some blow back,” said Dunn, a Metropolitan King County Council member.

DC: City Council Candidate Flips on Marriage Equality; Activists Skeptical

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Gay activists in Ward 5 have expressed skepticism over a candidate for the ward’s Council seat who says he no longer opposes the city’s same-sex marriage law.

Council candidate Delano Hunter, a Democrat, told the Blade last week that he no longer believes the marriage equality law should be subjected to a voter referendum, reversing his position from 2010 when he unsuccessfully ran for the Ward 5 seat against incumbent Harry Thomas (D).

The D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics officially declared the Ward 5 seat vacant on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after Thomas resigned shortly before pleading guilty to embezzling more than $300,000 in city funds. The board scheduled a special election on May 15 to fill the seat.

DC: City Council Candidate Drops Opposition to Marriage Equality

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

DC Council Candidate and Gay MarriageAn outspoken advocate for placing D.C.’s same-sex marriage law on the ballot in a voter referendum in 2010 says he no longer holds that view and will express “respect” for the law as a candidate for the City Council in a special election this spring.

Civic activist Delano Hunter has announced plans to run for the Ward 5 Council seat that became vacant last week when incumbent Harry Thomas, a Democrat, resigned after pleading guilty to federal theft and tax evasion charges.

“I do not seek to overturn the Marriage Equality Act when elected,” Hunter told the Blade in a statement released on Tuesday.

NH: GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Tries to Avoid Marriage Equality Issue

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

New Hampshire GOP Gubernatorial CandidateKevin Smith was in the trenches fighting the state law that allows same-sex couples to marry in New Hampshire. But as a Republican candidate for governor, the former Cornerstone Action director tells Patch he is focused on jobs.

During an interview in front of the New Hampshire Statehouse, Smith mentioned the word “jobs” more than a dozen times. He addressed gay marriage only when asked about it, and a bill (House Bill 437) that would repeal the statute.

A new group, “Standing Up for NH Families,” launched an ad campaign this week to urge lawmakers to reject the gay marriage repeal bill.

Spain: Conservative Candidate for Prime Minister Would “Change” The Marriage Equality Law

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Mariano RajoyMariano Rajoy, the president of Spain’s conservative Partido Popular (PP), has stiffened his stand against the nation’s gay marriage law. Rajoy is vying to become the nation’s next prime minister in a contest to be held in early 2012.

Last month, he backtracked a bit from comments he made in a November interview with daily El Pais, in which he said he believed the nation’s 5-year-old gay marriage law is unconstitutional and that he wouldn’t keep the law even if a court decided it was constitutional.

But in a recent interview broadcast on Radio Nacional de Espana (RNE) radio, Rajoy backtracked, saying he would “change” the gay marriage law.

Spain: Prime Minister Candidate Might Push for Gay Marriage Repeal if Elected

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

UPDATE: Mariano Rajoy has confirmed that he will scrap the law allowing same-sex couples to marry if he wins the elections in 2012. The right-wing PP leader says he does not care if the High Court has ratified the law, since he considers it ‘unconstitutional’.

———-

The president of the Partido Popular, Mariano Rajoy, has refused to say if he is “committed” to keeping the gay marriage law if elected Prime Minister in the next general election, as he says he is not sure if it is “constitutional.”

Rajoy, pictured, was asked the question today in an interview with El Pais today. The PP lodged a constitutional complaint against the measure five years ago, and Rajoy has not pledged to keep it, even if it was endorsed by the Constitutional Court.

“I will listen very carefully to the arguments of the Constitutional Court and the people, but I do not like the homosexual marriage act, and I do not think it is constitutional. My disagreement is about the use of the word ‘marriage’” said the leader of the Spanish opposition.

WI: Lieutenant Governor Candidate’s Gay Uncle Thinks She’s Not Sorry for Anti Gay Comments

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Rebecca KleefischRebecca Kleefisch’s gay uncle doubts she’s sorry for likening gay marriage to marrying a dog or a table, The Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel reported. “I was incredibly disappointed,” Chris Pfauser, who’s been in an openly gay relationship with Rob Gow for 28 years, said.

The GOP candidate for Wisconsin lieutenant governor apologized for her remarks on Thursday. Kleefisch, the running mate of gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker, made her remarks before winning the Republican primary on Sept. 14, but Wisconsin-based gay rights group Fair Wisconsin admonished her comments in a recent email to backers.

Speaking on Christian-based radio WVCY in January, Kleefisch objected to Wisconsin’s domestic partnership law signed by Governor Jim Doyle. The gay-inclusive law offers registered couples 43 rights, most of which center around estate planning and hospital visitation rights.

AK: GOP Senate Candidate Joe Miller Would Vote for Constitutional Ban on Gay Marriage

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Alaska Senate Candidate Joe MillerRepublican Senate nominee Joe Miller of Alaska said Tuesday he would vote for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. “That’s up to the people,” Miller ultimately said of a constitutional amendment in an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Tuesday night. “If you get a three-quarters vote ratifying – I’d vote for it. I would.”

Previously in the interview – which occurred with Maddow and Miller walking in and out of a building and down escalators before the Republican hopped in the front seat of an SUV mid-questioning – Miller repeatedly touted states’ rights, which seemed to create a contradiction between his hands-off beliefs on federal government and potential support for a constitutional same-sex marriage ban.

“There are different approaches to different values,” Miller said. “It’s really a state issue. It should be handled at the state level.”

NY: Paladino Used to Rent Space to Gay Clubs

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

State liquor license records show that New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino had once collected rent from two gay clubs located in buildings he owned in downtown Buffalo, according to a published report.

The report in the Daily News on Wednesday comes just after Paladino told a group of Orthodox Jewish leaders that he opposed schools for what he called “brainwashing” of students into thinking that being gay is just another choice and “not the way God created us.”

The newspaper reported that a club named Cobalt operated as a gay bar in 2004 and most of 2005 and was run by Paladino’s son, William. It was housed in a building owned by one of Paladino’s many companies, Huron Group LLC, the newspaper said. The club was run under another corporate name.

CA: GOP Attorney General Candidate Promises to Appeal Prop 8 Ruling if Elected

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley says that if he is elected as state Attorney General in November, he will defend Proposition 8 in court. Current AG Jerry Brown had declined to do so.

“The role of the attorney general is to defend the will of the people,” says [Cooley spokesman Kevin] Spillane. “He would defend (Prop. 8 ) and appeal” U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker’s ruling that found the anti-gay marriage ballot measure to be unconstitutional. Spillane says Cooley considers his position on Proposition 8 to be a matter of “general policy” if he became the next attorney general, not an issue of whether or not he opposes same-sex marriage.

Two weeks ago, Walker found Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that banned gay marriage in California, to be unconstitutional. The ruling has been appealed by proponents of Prop. 8, with the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals taking the case. Legal experts are not certain what role, if any, the next attorney general or governor in California will play in the appeal, but there is a possibility those offices could get involved.
