Pope Wants Catholics, Jews, Muslims to Unite Against Gays

Saturday, April 28th, 2012

Pope Wants Catholics, Jews, Muslims to Unite Against GaysThe Pope’s Nuncio in Britain, Archbishop Antonio Mennini, suggested that Catholics unite with their anti-gay counterparts in the Jewish and Muslim faiths to oppose gays who want marriage, the Telegraph reports:

Addressing English and Welsh bishops at their plenary meeting in Leeds, Archbishop Mennini, warned them they faced a “lengthy and probably difficult campaign”.

“I wonder if we shouldn’t ask for and look for more support among other Christian confessions and indeed, persons of other faiths,” he said. “It seems to me that, concerning the institution of marriage, and indeed the sanctity of human life, we have much in common with the position of the Jewish community, the Chief Rabbi and many of the more significant representatives of Islam.”

USA: Catholics Leaving Church Over Anti Marriage Equality Policies

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

Catholic ChurchEven though Roman Catholics are the second-largest religious group in the United States, the tradition has seen an exodus of members in recent decades. One in ten Americans is an ex-Catholic.

If ex-Catholics were counted as their own religious group, they would be the third-largest denomination in the United States, after Catholics and Baptists, according to the National Catholic Reporter.

If it weren’t for the infusion of Catholic immigrants, especially from Latin American, the American Catholic Church would be shrinking pretty fast. A recent study by two college professor tries to get at a simple question: Why are they leaving?

Conducted William J. Byron, a professor of business at St. Joseph’s University and Charles Zech, founder of the Center for the Study of Church Management of Villanova’s School of Business, the anecdotal study conducted in late fall of 2011 processes the opinions of 300 non-churchgoing Catholics in Trenton, New Jersey.

Santorum Losing Catholic Vote Over Abortion, Marriage Equality Stands?

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Rick Santorum, a Roman Catholic, has not fared well with Catholic voters, exit polls from states that have held nominating contests show.

According to several analysts, Santorum’s opposition to birth control and gay marriage could be alienating Catholic voters.

“It’s not easy to describe the typical Catholic anymore,” Thomas Reese, director of the Woodstock Theological Center, a Jesuit research institute affiliated with Georgetown University, told Reuters. “We’ve always traditionally been the big tent that included people of all stripes.”

MN: Catholics Ask Church Leaders to Follow Maine Bishop’s Lead in Marriage Equality Fight

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Catholics and the Minnesota Gay Marriage BanCatholics for Marriage Equality Minnesota is calling on Archbishop Nienstedt and all the bishops of Minnesota to follow the lead of Bishop Richard Malone of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, Maine by withdrawing all financial support from the hurtful anti-marriage amendment in Minnesota.

On Friday, March 2, Bishop Malone announced the Catholic hierarchy in Maine would be taking no active role in fundraising, staffing, advertising, or campaigning against marriage equality.

“We are encouraged by Bishop Malone’s decision to place at the center of the Church’s mission in Maine Jesus’ call to care for the poor and marginalized,” said Michael Bayly, Executive Director of Catholics for Marriage Equality MN. “We pray that the bishops here in Minnesota will not only follow the example of Maine but will also be open to the love and commitment embodied in the relationships of committed gay and lesbian couples.”

India and HomosexualityThey’re using an argument often used by bigots in Africa – that being gay is somehow a foreign invention. Times of India:

“It would be a horrendous situation in Indian society if it is allowed. The organizations (fighting for gay rights) should try to bring such people to national mainstream by providing counselling them,” said senior advocate Radha Krishana, appearing for a Catholic organization.

A Catholic Case for Marriage Equality

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Catholic Church and Gay MarriageThis month in Maryland and the state of Washington, an extraordinary dynamic is playing itself out: Two Catholic governors are prodding legislators to pass bills legalizing same-gender marriage. Like Govs. Andrew Cuomo in New York and Pat Quinn in Illinois — whose states recently legalized same-sex civil unions — Govs. Martin O’Malley and Christine Gregoire are acting against the strongly expressed opposition of their church’s bishops.

As Catholics who are involved in lesbian and gay ministry and outreach, we are aware that many people, some of them Catholics, believe that Catholics cannot faithfully disobey the public policies of the church’s hierarchy. But this is not the case.

The Catholic Church is not a democracy, but neither is it a dictatorship. Ideally, our bishops should strive to proclaim the sensus fidelium , the faith as it is understood by the whole church. At the moment, however, the bishops and the majority of the church are at odds. A survey published in September by the Public Religion Research Institute found that 52 percent of Catholics support marriage equality and 69 percent support civil unions.

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

The right-leaning media watchdog group PolitiFact says it’s mostly true that a majority of Catholics support gay marriage.

Garden State Equality Chairman Steve Goldstein recently responded to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s claim that his Catholic faith was behind his opposition to gay marriage by saying a majority of Catholics support the institution.

PolitiFact investigated, and after analyzing the results of three nationwide surveys, concluded Goldstein’s assertion to be “mostly true.”
