NY: Catholics Cry “Religious Liberty” in Face of Marriage Equality Advancement

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Timothy DolanThe New York State Catholic Conference, which is lobbying to stop the state Senate from voting on the marriage equality bill, argues that support for the bill as currently worded would constitute “a vote against religious liberty and against the very ministries and services that New Yorkers cannot do without.”

In a note posted to Facebook Thursday morning, the conference, which is the public policy arm of the Catholic Church in the state, stated what it believes is the “real agenda” behind the legislation as currently worded.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo submitted the Marriage Equality Act Tuesday with language for religious exemptions, specifically, to provide, parallel to the state’s existing human rights law, that religious institutions, as private entities, would not be required to solemnize same-sex weddings or to rent facilities such as catering halls in opposition to their beliefs.

US Catholics Support Marriage Equality, So Why Doesn’t the Church?

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

Recently, U.S. Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI), who previously supported civil unions, voiced his support for marriage equality. In an op-ed published in the Providence Journal, Rep. Langevin stated that it took the commitment ceremony of a long time staff member to convince him that all loving unions, regardless of the gender or sexuality of the people involved, deserve to be treated equally under the law. Rep. Langevin, a devout Catholic, has previously been supportive of LGBT rights, but his new position on marriage equality is a turning point – one which reflects the views of many lay members of the Catholic Church in the United States.

Over half of the United States population now supports marriage equality; among lay Catholics that number jumps to nearly three quarters when talking about any type of relationship recognition or civil marriage. The percentage of lay Catholics who support marriage equality is higher than among any other Christian denomination in the United States.

And yet, in every state in which the legislature or court system has moved towards marriage equality, the local Catholic Diocese have vigorously objected. In the past week, Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of the Diocese of Providence, RI, has written multiple editorials claiming that allowing all loving couples the chance to marry would somehow be “dangerous.” Now that marriage equality is no longer the current focus in Rhode Island, the diocese is targeting civil unions.

Marriage Equality Poll Shocker – 62% of Catholics Support Marriage Equality

Monday, March 21st, 2011

The Washington Post-ABC News poll shows that same-sex marriage is supported by 53 percent of those surveyed. That’s amazing. For the first time in the poll’s history, the level of support for marriage equality cracked 50 percent. For the first time, a majority of men (53 percent) say yes to allowing gays to wed. But what’s truly historic is where white Catholics are on this issue.

The question was straightforward: “Do you think it should be illegal or legal for gay and lesbian couples to get married?” In February 2010, an astounding 55 percent of white Catholics said “legal.” In the current poll, the number jumped 8 points to 63 percent. This Post-ABC News poll corresponds with a Gallup poll I gasped at in June 2010. That survey showed that Catholics (62 percent) and men (53 percent) were leading the charge on acceptance of same-sex marriage, which was supported by 52 percent of all surveyed.

This doesn’t come as a surprise to Phil Attey, executive director of Catholics for Equality, who alerted me to this interesting nugget in the Post-ABC News polling data. “American Catholics consistently poll higher on progressive social justice issues — including the freedom to marry for all,” he said.

IA: Catholics Push for Constitutional Convention to Ban Gay Marriage

Monday, September 20th, 2010

The Iowa Catholic Conference, the political and policy arm of the state’s four Catholic dioceses, announced Monday that it is urging Iowans to convene a constitutional convention in order to eventually ban same-sex marriage.

“The ICC is encouraging Iowa Catholics to vote ‘yes’ on the decennial ballot question as a way to work with others for a marriage amendment to the Iowa Constitution that would affirm the traditional understanding that marriage is a union between a man and a woman,” the group said in a press release, later adding: “For far too long, the Iowa legislature has denied the people of Iowa their voice on issues such as traditional marriage, spending limits, tax reform, term limits, and Second Amendment rights.”

Every 10 years, Iowa voters get a chance to remake the state’s government through the constitutional convention. In 2000, the last time Iowans voted on whether the state should convene a constitutional convention, only about 32 percent supported it. However, following last year’s Iowa Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage, many conservatives began openly advocating for a convention to be called as a quick method to reverse the ruling.

CA: New Poll Shows Catholics Favor Marriage Equality More Than Evangelicals

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

A new survey mirrors a recent Field Poll that found a slight majority of Californians now support gay marriage. The poll also explores how major religious groups in California feel about same-sex marriage. The survey by the Washington D.C. based non-partisan Public Religion Research Institute arrives as a federal judge mulls the legality of Proposition 8 – the law that outlawed those marriages in this state.

Churches played an influential role in the passage of Proposition 8 almost two years ago. But researcher Robert Jones said his polling indicated that religious people hardly form a monolith when it comes to gay marriage. “The debate is often framed as secular liberals against conservative religious people in California,” Jones said. “Our data clearly shows is that this is not the case – that the religious community itself is basically clearly split.”

Jones heads the Public Religion Research Institute. The organization’s survey of 3,351 churchgoers in California found that White mainline Protestants – including Episcopalians and Lutherans – and Catholics are support same-sex marriage than substantially more than Protestant evangelicals and African American Protestants. The split is biggest among Latinos. The poll found that 57% of Latino Catholics would vote for same-sex marriage today, compared to just 22% Latino Protestants.

Slovenia: Catholics, Muslims Unite in Second Country Against Gay Rights

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

This comes on the heels of Catholics and Muslims working together against marriage equality in Malta – a disturbing new trend?

“Responding to the debate on the proposed family law, Ljubljana Archbishop Anton Stres and Mufti of the Islamic Community in Slovenia Nedzad Grabus signed in Ljubljana on Friday a joint statement calling on the authorities to protect the family as a community of a man, woman and children.”
