Catholic School Censors Teen’s Pro Gay Marriage Editorial

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

A Minnesota Catholic high school has deleted a gay teen’s editorial calling for increased gay rights, including marriage, Minnesota Public Radio reported.

Officials at Benilde-St. Margaret’s in St. Louis Park, Minnesota deleted two student editorials that criticized an anti-gay marriage DVD produced by Minnesota’s Catholic bishops. The DVDs were distributed to parishioners prior to Election Day, November 2, and called on Catholic voters to reject pro-gay marriage lawmakers. (Minnesota voters did overwhelmingly vote for Republican candidates.)

The student-run newspaper The Knight Errant published two editorials along with a story about the bishop’s Preserving Marriage in Minnesota DVD last Thursday. But both editorials were removed from the paper’s website just days later.

Paraguay: Politician Wants to Censor Networks for Mentioning Gays

Friday, September 10th, 2010

The president of the city council in Asunción, Paraguay, has suggested that local media outlets be censored and prevented from making mention of gays during prime time.

Referring to LGBTs as “these people” and expressing his “concern” “as a father,” Hugo Ramirez sought to restrict mention of gays during prime time hours on local media outlets, reported anti-gay religious site LifeSiteNews on Sept. 9. The report said Amnesty International–which the site dismissed as a “homosexualist organization”–had objected to Ramirez’s plan, citing international treaties and Paraguay’s own constitution.

“[A]s a father I express my concern over the focus given to the topic without taking into account the time,” said Ramirez. “I propose that notices be sent to the media and other organizations for the purpose of preventing information that involve these people from continuing to receive so much space in the media.”

TN: School Backs Off Censorship of Gay Student

Monday, April 26th, 2010

The American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee and Lambda Legal has announced that they have received assurances from officials at Greenbrier High School that the school will stop censoring a student from wearing shirts expressing pro-gay messages.

As part of a settlement, the school will also have to provide training on its anti-bullying policy to ensure that it is clear that harassment of any student, regardless of sexual orientation, is not acceptable, by either other students or faculty members.

“Students not only have a First Amendment right to be out at school, but the right to an education free from discrimination and harassment,” said Tricia Herzfeld, ACLU of Tennessee staff attorney. “We applaud the school for recognizing this and taking steps to ensure that they are providing a safe and equal learning environment for all students.”
