Where the Gay Couples Are

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Gay Couples in the USA - MapNew numbers from the Census have accounted for August’s reporting errors (many people marked the wrong sex for their spouse). There are now 646,464 self-reported same-sex couples in the US, down from the 901,997:

Provincetown, Massachusetts, still ranks highest, with about 148 same-sex households per 1,000, or 14.8 percent of households. Wilton Manors, Florida, has 125 same-sex households per 1,000, or 12.5 percent, and Palm Springs, California, has 107 same-sex households per 1,000, or 10.7 percent. … Cities with populations under 100,000 tend to have much higher rates than larger cities.

US Census Counted 130K Gay/Lesbian Married Couples

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The Census Bureau released a revised estimate Tuesday of the number of same-sex married couples living in the United States: More than 130,000 same-sex households recorded themselves as married. Another 500,000 same-sex households indentified themselves as unmarried.

The figures provide a rare snapshot of married and unmarried gay couples in the U.S. based on the government count conducted last year, when gay marriage was legal in five states and the District of Columbia. It comes at a time when public opposition to gay marriage is easing and advocacy groups are seeking a state-by-state push for broader legal rights.

Some 131,729 same-sex couples checked “husband” or “wife” boxes on their decennial census forms, the first time people could do so since gay marriage became legal in Massachusetts starting in 2004.

Friday, August 5th, 2011

AUSTRALIAN same-sex couples who married overseas will fill out the Census on Tuesday knowing their union will be officially counted for the first time.

Australian Marriage Equality pushed for the change and has produced a guide showing couples how to complete the Census.

“We urge all same-sex partners who want to indicate they are married to take advantage of the fact that now they can,” said Peter Furness, a spokesman for Australian Marriage Equality.

MA: Out Gay/Lesbian Couples Rise 17% Since 2000, Census Says

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

In the decade that saw Massachusetts become the first state to legalize gay marriage, the number of reported same-sex couples in the state climbed sharply, suggesting to many advocates that there is a growing public acceptance and that more gay couples are willing to declare their relationships openly.

Since 2000, the number of couples living together in the state who identified themselves as same sex rose roughly 17 percent, to more than 20,000, according to the latest estimates from the US Census Bureau.

In 2009, the state’s proportion of same-sex couples ranked among the country’s highest, and census surveys showed gay couples living across the state, in communities large and small.

Patchwork of Recognition Laws Caused Census Confusion for Gay/Lesbian Couples

Monday, September 20th, 2010

It’s complicated.

That’s one overarching take-away message from the results of a new national survey of cohabitating same-sex couples designed to understand if and how they completed their 2010 census forms.

“It’s really difficult for same-sex couples in the current legal climate to know how to fill out these forms,” said Gary J. Gates, Ph.D., a leading expert in demographic and economic characteristics of the lesbian and gay community. Based at UCLA’s Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Public Policy, Gates is the author of the survey report analyzing census 2010.

The patchy legal status of same-sex relationships – everything from legal marriage to civil unions to registered domestic partnerships – accounts in part for the complexity.

For example, “If you live in a state that recognizes either marriage or civil unions or domestic partnerships that are marriage-like, then you are more likely to use the terms ‘husband’ or ‘wife,’ regardless of the legal status,” Gates said, “than if you live in a state that does not recognize any thing.”

CA: One in Seven Unmarried Same Sex Couples Lives in California

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Of the 700,266 same-sex unmarried partners counted by the U.S. Census Bureau, one in seven of them reside in California, according to an analysis by Social Explorer.

The Social Explorer website provides demographic analysis in a limited free format and via a more robust subscription service. The site blog also features certain stats pertinent to current social events.

With the recent overturning of California’s ban on same-sex marriage, which voters passed as Proposition 8 in November 2008, Social Explorer parsed out the Census data.
