IL: Rahm Emanuel Presides Over Wedding of Gay Advisor

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Before heading to Millennium Park to celebrate the civil unions of 30 gay and lesbian couples, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel officiated over the civil union of one of his top staffers, the Chicago Tribune reported.

On Wednesday, the first day Illinois’ civil unions law took effect, David Spielfogel, Emanuel’s chief of policy and strategic planning, tweeted to his 370 followers: “civil union license in hand!”

Emanuel noted his officiating duties while speaking at Millennium Park before the civil union ceremonies got underway.

IL: Counter Protest Planned at Anti Gay Rally in Chicago

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

A number of gay rights advocacy groups plan a counter-protest on Friday against an anti-gay rally to overturn Illinois civil unions and defend “traditional” marriage.

The rally organized by a number of anti-gay groups, including Americans for Life, to “protect marriage” is planned on the eve of a historic day in Illinois.

Next Wednesday Illinois will for the first time recognize civil unions, giving same-sex couples many of the same rights, benefits, and privileges as married couples.

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Chicago Civil Unions EventPlans are under way for a celebration of multiple civil unions in Bolingbrook, a southwest suburb of Chicago, when the Illinois civil unions law becomes effective at the beginning of June.

A wedding planner is offering “Dream Gay Weddings” at the upscale Bolingbrook Golf Club (pictured), with six officiants available to perform ceremonies, and the local office of the DuPage County Clerk is seeking to extend its hours to meet the expected demand for civil union licenses when they become available June 1, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Wedding planner Cheryl Hooten said Bolingbrook officials contacted her about organizing a special civil unions event, and she hopes to attract as many as 60 couples.

IL: Gay Activists Arrested at Chicago Marriage Equality Protest

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Chicago Marriage Equality RallySix LGBT activists were arrested Monday afternoon in Chicago after refusing to leave a city marriage bureau after a same-sex couple was denied a marriage license.

Judy Heithmar and Danelle Wylder sought the license at the marriage bureau in the Richard J. Daley Center in downtown Chicago. They were arrested along with Cassandra Avenatti, Lindsey Dietzler, Corrine Mina, and Noa Francis Shayden, said Andrea Crain, a spokeswoman for their group.

The people arrested are affiliated with Join the Impact Chicago and Video Action League, which were responding to a call by Marriage Equality USA and GetEqual for coordinated actions across the country on Valentine’s Day to raise awareness about the need for federal marriage equality. As of late afternoon, they were still being processed by police, but were likely to be charged with trespassing and released on bond, Crain told The Advocate in an e-mail.

IL: Chicago Cardinal Disses Gay Marriage Advocates

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

It should not be surprising that, when confronted about the Roman Catholic Church’s opposition to same-sex marriage, Cardinal Francis George chose to rely upon the usual dismissal of what it means to be lesbian or gay, and to rely upon the same excuses and beliefs which the Vatican has pushed for some time.

As Chuck Colbert reported:

George told student John Falcone his “argument was not with Mother Church but with Mother Nature,” adding that anyone who advocates same-sex marriage or its equivalent “has lost touch with the common understanding of the human race.”

“No one has the right to change marriage,” George went on to say, neither “the Church” nor “the state.”

IL: New Play Tackles Different Takes on Gay Marriage, Weddings

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

Holly HughesPerformance artist Holly Hughes and her longtime partner want to marry each other but may need to hold competing ceremonies. Hughes, who has spent more than 20 years on the frontlines in America’s culture wars, wants to dress up, have “Mr. Showbiz” Murray Hill officiate, and make the event a bitingly funny political statement.

Her girlfriend, anthropologist Esther Newton, would prefer to wear slip-on shoes, and keep the nuptials serious and the whole affair private.

It’s just this kind of conflict that’s led Hughes to collaborate with Chicago-based director Megan Carney and WOW Cafe founder Maureen Angelos on a new performance piece called “Let Them Eat Cake,” an interactive “marriage gone wrong” in which the audience takes the role of wedding guests who are encouraged to salvage the situation through spirited debate.
