MD: County Commissioner Calls Marriage Equality a “Vote Against Children”

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

Maryland Marriage Equality BillCarroll County Commissioner Robin Frazier, R-District 1, this week announced the Board’s proclamation of Feb. 7-14 as “marriage week,” recognizing marriage as an institution that “binds men and women together in a network of mutual aid and mutual obligation,” according to the document signed by the five commissioners.

This is the second year that the board has adopted such a proclamation. The document is part of an international marriage week movement led by National Marriage Week USA and other organizations in 16 countries.

The purpose of the movement is to recognize and promote marriage, understanding, according to the organization’s website, that “social science is clear that children are best served when they grow up with both a mother and father.”

Growing Up Better Adjusted: Children of Lesbian Couples Tend to Have Better Childhoods

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Lesbian parenting has been a hotly debated topic for years, but it has recently drawn more attention as gay rights issues took over the headlines. Critics have long argued that the children of lesbians, and of same-sex couples in general, will face a harder life due to coming from a socially unaccepted family structure. However, a recent study suggests otherwise. Evidence proves that the children of lesbian parents may actually fare better in life than the children of heterosexual parents.

The study, published in Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, found that the children of lesbian couples tended to have higher social skills, did better in school, and had fewer incidents of rule-breaking and aggression than the children of heterosexual parents, according to an article published on CNN. The nearly 25-year-old study followed 78 lesbian couples who conceived through sperm donations, regularly assessing the psychological well-being of the children of these couples through questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire included queries about family and peer relationships, academics, and personal feelings, the results of which were then compared with the answers from children of heterosexual couples.

The findings that the children of lesbians functioned better than those of traditional mother-and-father parentage refute concerns long held by critics of same-sex parenting. Critics have argued that children of same-sex couples are more likely to grow up psychologically disturbed because of harassment and social exclusion, but a number of factors may be behind why this is not the case. For one, homophobia, while still entirely too prevalent in society, has decreased, so the children of same-sex couples are less likely to be harassed solely for that reason. In addition, lesbian couples are typically more involved in the lives of their children so they may deal with issues of harassment and bullying before it can cause any real emotional trauma in the child. This is because for lesbian couples, having a child is a more labor-intensive process, as well as an expensive one, so those who do successfully conceive are more likely to become devoted and communicative parents.

To have a child, lesbian parents must find a sperm donor and undergo an invasive artificial insemination process. Sometimes, several of these processes must occur before a woman can become successfully pregnant, and all of these treatments are costly. For this reason, most lesbian couples wait until they are financially stable and mentally ready to have a child before trying to conceive. With heterosexual couples, however, there is an increased chance of unexpectedly conceiving a child, thereby increasing the chances of the child being raised by a couple who were not financially, emotionally, or mentally ready to become parents.

The main reason behind why the children of lesbian parents tend to fare better, then, is not that lesbians simply make better parents. Rather, the findings indicate that parents who are financially and emotionally prepared to have a child tend to raise well-adjusted kids. Due to the work involved in having a child for lesbian couples, they are typically better prepared for the responsibilities of raising a child when they become pregnant than heterosexual couples. Still, these findings show that same-sex parents can raise children without all of the psychological implications that critics had originally feared.

Marriage Equality Ireland to Release Report on Children of Gays, Lesbians

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

An Irish equality group is to launch the results of a report documenting the experience of children raised in Ireland by LGBT parents. In researching their report, entitled Voices of Children, Marriage Equality – a body working for equal marriage rights for lesbians and gay men in Ireland – conducted interviews with 12 participants, all of who were raised by lesbian parents.

The range of social and legal issues raised in the report will be discussed at a one-day conference being held as part of the launch.

The Irish Times reports that Voices of Children “reveals the closeness of such families, but also the anguish caused by legal loopholes that rob them of basic rights”.

Study: Kids From Gay Families Same in School As Straight Families

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

In nearly every discussion, debate or lawsuit about gay marriage, the talk at some point turns to family values. Do gay couples make for good parents? Will their children – whether adopted, conceived with the help of a surrogate or brought in from a pre-existing relationship – adjust, adapt and succeed in a world dominated by traditional families?

The answers usually depend on who’s giving them, and come dressed in anecdotes and coloured by bias. But Stanford sociologist Michael Rosenfeld brings something new to the conversation: facts and figures derived from the country’s largest data bank – the U.S. Census.

In a study published this month in the journal Demography, Rosenfeld concludes that children being raised by same-sex couples have nearly the same educational achievement as children raised by married heterosexual couples.

CA: Analysis of Prop 8 Campaign Shows Late Shift in White Parents to Yes Side

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Immediately after Proposition 8 passed, many who supported same-sex marriage tried to make sense of the results. A set of assumptions gained wide acceptance. Some are correct. Most, however, are just plain wrong. And it’s crucial that we know what happened in the last election before launching another attempt to legalize marriage for all.

I recently headed a team that analyzed data from polls conducted by the No on 8 campaign during the run-up to the election. Our analysis sheds new light on what fueled the Proposition 8 victory.

One big question after the election: Who moved? Six weeks before the vote, Proposition 8 was too close to call. But in the final weeks, supporters pulled ahead, and by election day, the outcome was all but certain.

New Study: Kids in Gay Families Fare as Well as in Straight Ones

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Some researchers are calling for an end to bans on gay adoption. A study by one scientific journal says kids raised by gay parents are no worse off than kids raised by heterosexual couples.

The study is published in the August issue of “Applied Developmental Science”.

The also suggests that kids raised by gay couples are in some ways better off. The researchers say their findings should lead to the end of bans on gay adoptions.

Chile: Activists Hold Forum on Gay Rights and Education

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Students of all sexual orientation need to know they are not alone, say activists who came together for Chile’s first forum on education and sexual diversity.

The forum was held Wednesday afternoon at the National Library in Santiago for teachers, secondary school and university students, and was sponsored by Chile’s gay rights group, MOVILH.

The event was designed to open the discussion on topics relating to schooling (of all levels) and sexual orientation in Chile. The date of the forum was strategic, in order to talk to students in the beginning of the first semester.

CA: Mayor of Palm Springs Would Be First Gay, Legally Married Member of Congress With Children

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Stephen Adams, vice president and regional manager of Sterling Bank & Trust, and Equality California Executive Director Geoff Kors hosted a fundraising event for Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet on the 40th floor of the Transamerica Pyramid. Mayor Pougnet is the Democratic candidate challenging Republican Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (Sonny Bono’s former wife) for her seat in the US House of Representatives. Adams said Pougnet has a very good chance to beat her and turn the congressional district Democratic.

Pougnet would be the first gay, legally married member of Congress with young children. In 2007, he was elected Mayor of Palm Springs where he has proven himself as a bi-partisan leader. He is committed to sustainability and renewable energy initiatives, will champion comprehensive health care, and fight to reinvigorate the American economy. He is challenging Mary Bono-Mack – one of only a few Republican members of Congress who is serving in a district that Barack Obama won.

Adams acknowledged the presence of Christine Pelosi, daughter of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, calling the latter “a hero in health care.” He also spoke of the extreme rudeness and sometimes violence of many of the rightwing tea party people – especially calling Congressman Barney Frank the f-word.
