Argentina: Gay Marriage Bill to Be Debated in Senate Committee

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

It’s now the turn of the Upper House, for the debate over same-sex marriage is about to continue in the General Legislation Committee. After a controversial demonstration against the initiative took place in the streets of Buenos Aires yesterday, some groups aim at approving the bill that seeks to amend the Civil Code to allow gay couples to get married.

Liliana Negre de Alonso leads the Committee. According to several sources, the debate is scheduled to start at 4:00pm. Several leaders are pledged to be present, such as Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transexual Argentine Federation President María Rachid, and the head of La Fulana community centre Claudia Castrosin Verdu.

The bill aiming at allowing same-sex couples to get married posts the support of the biggest caucuses’ heads in the Upper House, Victory Front’s Miguel Angel Pichetto and Radical Gerardo Morales.

Argentina: Gay Marriage Bill Assigned to Senate Committee; Dabate in June?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

The Argentine Senate received Thursday a gay marriage bill approved last week by the Chamber of Deputies (la Camara de Diputados), government news agency Telam reported. The bill was assigned to the General Law Committee chaired by Liliana Negre de Alonso.

Negre de Alonso said she disagreed with giving gay couples the right to marry but added that she would not block debate on the issue.

“I will guarantee that we’ll add this matter to the agenda because I have always guaranteed the debate,” she said.

RI: House Considering Gay Divorce Bill

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

To some, it was about access to justice. To others, it was about a hidden agenda to legalize same-sex marriage. And for the dozen or so people who spoke Tuesday before the House Judiciary Committee, there was no common ground.

Drawing the attention was a bill sponsored by Rep. Timothy A. Williamson, D-West Warwick, that would allow couples to divorce in Rhode Island even if they were not eligible to marry here.

That ability, Williamson and some supporters of the bill said, is granted in other cases where a couple is not eligible to marry in Rhode Island – for example, cases involving a woman who marries before she is 16, or those involving a marriage that Rhode Island law would deem incestuous. But it is not granted in the case of same-sex marriages.
