CT: Chely Wright Marries Partner

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Connecticut - Chely Wright WeddingCountry music singer Chely Wright and Lauren Blitzer tied the knot on Saturday. The women announced in April plans to marry at Blitzer’s aunt’s home in Connecticut, one of six states where gay marriage is legal. (The women live in New York, but at the time of their announcement the state had yet to legalize such unions.)

Both wore Jose Dias-designed white gowns for their big day. Wright told PEOPLE.com that they opted out of including veils because “We like our hair too much!”

The couple served barbecue from New York’s Blue Smoke restaurant to their roughly 200 guests.

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Some more good news from a State Capitol. This time it’s Hartford. And, it’s progress on transgender anti-discrimination. Governor Malloy, who was elected last November, signed a bill to provide protections from discrimination based on gender identity or expression into law today:

CT: Senate Dems Pass Transgender Protection Bill

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

The Senate voted 20 to 16 early today for final passage of a bill outlawing discrimination against people who are transgendered, ending a years-long fight in the General Assembly. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has promised to sign the bill as soon as it reaches his desk.

As was the case in the House, every Republican voted against the bill, including five GOP senators who voted for a similar measure four years ago. Democrats Paul Doyle of Wethersfield and Joan Hartley of Waterbury joined all 14 Republicans in opposing the bill.

The bill is the first civil rights legislation to pass in Connecticut in recent decades without Republican votes. Passage of a gay rights bill 20 years ago and same-sex civil unions and marriage bills more recently all occurred with some support from the GOP.

CT: Rep. Wants OK for Marriage Equality on Navy Bases in State

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Chris MurphyRep. Chris Murphy says military chaplains should be allowed to officiate same-sex marriages in Connecticut.

In an April 13 memo on “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal training, Rear Adm. Mark L. Tidd, chief of Navy Chaplains, said wedding ceremonies for gay and lesbian service members would be sanctioned at naval facilities. That decision was later suspended, Murphy said, after the Navy received a letter of objection from a group of House Republicans.

On Wednesday the congressman sent a letter to Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus requesting a reinstatement of the decision to allow same-sex marriage ceremonies at naval facilities.

CT: Vote in Senate on Gender Identity Bill Today

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Following its approval by the Connecticut House, today the state Senate will consider a bill granting anti-discrimination protections on the basis of gender identity.

The measure has been been characterized as the “Bathroom Bill” by anti-gay groups, who are today flooding right wing sites with pleas to call Connecticut’s legislators. Cited in the Christianist materials are numerous cases of men arrested for peeping or videotaping in women’s restrooms.

CT: House Passes Transgender Protection Bill

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Connecticut Transgender Protections BillWith every Republican in opposition, the House of Representatives voted 77 to 62 Thursday night for legislation barring discrimination against perhaps one of the last unprotected minorities, the transgender population.

The bill barring discrimination on the basis of gender identity applies to employment, housing and public accommodations, including the use of restrooms – a topic that dominated the five-hour debate.

The bill, which now goes to the Senate, was considered an unfinished piece of business by the “LGBT community,” the coalition of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists who helped pass the state’s first gay rights bill 20 years ago.

CT: Town Halls Specialize in Quick Gay Weddings

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Connecticut Gay WeddingsNot all marriages are announced with wedding bells. For some couples, it’s as silent as a few signatures between themselves, a justice of the peace and a town clerk. Who needs bells and whistles when you have love?

While all types of people go for quick, two-day or same-day marriages, it’s undeniable that since 2008, when Connecticut legalized same sex matrimony, local towns have seen an influx of gay couples looking for a quick tie of the knot in town hall. Town clerks issue the marriage licenses, but do not perform the ceremony. That task is left to a justice of the peace.

“I marry three types of couples,” said Mary Pugh, a Norwalk-based CT Justice of the Peace. “People who get a big fancy mansion and have a wedding, people who have been together for a million years and just want to get married, and the third group is people from out of state.”
