USA: Marriage Equality is a Conservative Position

Monday, April 16th, 2012

Gay Marriage and Marriage EqualityGay-rights causes are no longer liberal causes. The campaigns for “equality,” and especially for marriage equality, are essentially conservative positions. That’s why four Republicans could help to legalize same-sex marriage in New York, with little fear of repercussions. Far from being radical, a vote for same-sex marriage is a vote for marriage. The only safer act for a politician is kissing a baby.

If elected officials would take on issues like social and economic justice, that would be a bold political risk. How can you tell it’s such a safe move? Follow the money. The campaign for same-sex marriage has been lucrative for politicians — attracting big donors just like every other hot button issue. The big donations have had big results, and that is disturbing even if the results are noble.

The theme of today’s advocates, equality, has become a touchstone in struggles for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender right. But something got lost in the shift to focusing on equality. Once upon a time, activists were fighting for the right to be different. Now the fight is for the right to be the same.

NY: GOP Lawmakers Who Voted for Marriage Equality Facing Challenges

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

New York Senator Mark GrisantiNew York conservatives are making good on their threat to punish several state Republican lawmakers for voting in favor of marriage equality in 2011. Four Republican State Senators who voted for the bill will not be endorsed by the Conservative Party and three will likely face Republican primary challengers this fall.

The three likely facing challenges are James Alesi, Mark Grisanti, and Roy McDonald. The fourth Republican State Senator that voted for marriage equality, Steven Saland has so far escaped a primary challenge, but will not get the Conservative endorsement. Saland has indicated that there may still be a challenge against him.

Last year, New York Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long threatened to deny legislative candidates endorsements from his organization and he has not backed off that stance since. “Anybody who votes to destroy traditional marriage would not receive our endorsement. That is in cement and there is no change,” he said.

Will Spain’s Conservatives Overturn Marriage Equality Law There?

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Spain Marriage EqualitySpaniards have been taken by surprise by the new conservative government’s aggressive efforts to implement social reforms, overturning several liberal laws passed by the previous government amid tremendous economic uncertainty.

The previous Socialist government passed a substantial amount of liberal legislation in the last eight years, including limiting the role of the Catholic Church in the state, legalizing gay marriage, relaxing abortion restrictions, and reforming the educational curriculum.

While the Catholic Church and the ruling Popular Party accused Socialists of imposing an ideologically-motivated agenda too quickly, Socialists said they were only harmonizing Spanish laws with European standards – with the support of the majority of Spanish citizens. Dozens of polls over the past three years have consistently showed an even split on social issues.

UK: Conservative MPs Try to Sabotage Marriage Equality Plan

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

MPs Try to Sabotage UK Marriage EqualityConservative MPs are trying to sabotage David Cameron’s plan to legalise gay marriage, threatening a rebellion bigger than the one in which 81 voted against the Government on Europe.

A campaign to defeat the Coalition’s plan to lift the ban on civil marriage for gay and lesbian couples is being organised by traditionalist Tory MPs, who claim the idea would weaken the institution of marriage. Ministers fear the revolt will undermine Mr Cameron’s drive to modernise his party.

MPs have been promised a free vote, although ministers will be urged to support Mr Cameron. Opponents claim more than 100 Tory backbenchers could vote against gay marriage, dwarfing the number who voted for a Europe referendum last October. Backbenchers have protested to ministers about the Government’s backing for the change at private meetings of the 1922 Committee of Tory MPs. “Feelings are running high,” one senior party source said yesterday.

Conservatives Should Support Marriage Equality

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Conservatives and Marriage EqualityAs pointed out in recent articles, Cumberland is a very conservative area.

When it comes to traditional conservative values like individual liberty, an emphasis on a small government, the recognition of the importance of family as an institution, and equal justice under the law, I have to say that conservatism is right on all counts.

Liberty is defined as “freedom from arbitrary government control.” I don’t think anyone wants the government to deny them the right to live as they see fit, provided that they aren’t hurting anyone.

A true conservative does not want excessive government involvement in the lives of peaceful citizens. Liberty is inextricably bound to the idea of small government. A government that is big enough to deprive a huge percentage of its population of rights afforded to the rest of its citizens is a government that is too big.

Conservative Landslide in Spanish Elections Triggers Fears for Marriage Equality Law

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Spain Marriage EqualityThe election of a conservative, Mariano Rajoy, as Spain’s prime minister has some LGBT activists worried he will try to repeal the nation’s marriage equality law.

Rajoy’s Popular Party has filed a suit challenging the law, and he has said he believes it is unconstitutional and that he prefers civil unions to marriage for same-sex couples. However, during the campaign he softened his rhetoric, and his platform did not include repeal of the law, the Bloomberg news service reports.

He told Spanish newspaper El Pais that the Constitutional Court would have the final word on the law, enacted in 2005 under Socialist prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

Spain: Gay Community Fearful Conservatives Will Repeal Marriage Equality After Election

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Isabel Descals and her girlfriend raced to get hitched before Sunday’s general elections in Spain almost sure to be won by the anti-gay marriage conservative opposition.

The Popular Party (PP) has appealed to the Constitutional Court against Spain’s gay marriage law, which has allowed over 20,000 gay couples to wed since it was passed by the Socialist government in 2005.

Opposition leader Mariano Rajoy has repeatedly said he prefers the term “civil union” to “marriage” for same-sex unions. “We listened to what the PP says and they are going to take a step backwards, at least when it comes to marriage because Rajoy has said he prefers civil unions,” said Descals, a 40-year-old manager from Valencia.

Herman Cain in Trouble for Not Being Anti-Gay Enough

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Herman Cain’s opposition to a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage has put the GOP candidate at odds with social conservatives.

Speaking Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, Cain told host David Gregory that he “wouldn’t seek a constitutional ban for same-sex marriage, but I am pro traditional marriage.”

The former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza also stated his opposition to such an amendment during an earlier New Hampshire GOP debate.

UK: Now That British Conservatives Are Pushing Marriage Equality, Whither the GOP?

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

Today’s announcement that the Conservative government in Britain will push legislation to legalize same-sex marriage may shake up politics in the United Kingdom. But for the party of Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher to reverse itself on the issue may have just as significant an effect on politics in the United States.

The British Conservative Party has long been a model for Republicans; GOP presidential candidates invariably cite Churchill and Thatcher as heroes for articulating the fundamental tenets of conservatism. The political and intellectual links between the Republicans and the Conservatives — bolstered by transatlantic conservative think-tanks and the Murdoch media empire — are far greater than the GOP ties with any other right-leaning party.

This relationship seemed to only strengthen after the election last year of David Cameron, a charismatic Conservative equally committed to slashing government budgets and armed interventions in the Middle East. It’s no accident that during a July visit to London Mitt Romney rushed to have his picture taken with Cameron.

Marriage Equality Advocates Need to Learn to Speak the Language of Conservatives

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

Though the gulf between gays and conservatives might seem deep and wide, leaders who embrace both identities have been working to create a bridge that will allow the blessings of liberty to flow to gay and lesbian individuals and their families.

The key, one prominent conservative lesbian says, is for the love that once dared not to speak its name to learn a new language: That of conservatism.

America lags far behind some nations with respect to GLBT legal and social parity. Only six states currently offer marriage equality to families headed by two men or two women, and the slate of Republican candidates vying for the party nomination for next year’s White House race have almost all said that they would support an amendment to the United States Constitution that would enshrine discriminatory language in the nation’s bedrock law.
