Florida: Charlie Crist Plays Gay Marriage Ban Card

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Florida governor Charlie Crist, an independent candidate for U.S. Senate, appeared to voice support Sunday for a federal constitutional amendment to prohibit same-sex couples from marrying, then clarified his position to say it applied strictly to Florida.

According to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, Crist told CNN, “When it comes to marriage, I think it is a sacred institution, I believe it is between a man and a woman, but partners living together, you know, I don’t have a problem with it.”

The Victory Fund reports that Crist issued a clarification hours afterward to say that his comments only applied to the Florida constitution.

Kenyans Approve New Constitution; Could Non Discrimination Clause Open Door to Gay Rights?

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Kenyans approved a new constitution on Thursday that will, for the first time, make the president subject to impeachment, will enable citizens to remove parliamentary representatives and includes a sweeping bill of rights.

The new bill of rights contains a historic clause outlawing discrimination on any grounds, including race and gender. Conservative Kenyans complain that the clause could pave the way for gay marriage.

The new constitution devolves power to the country-level, abolishes the post of prime minister, established a Senate and reduces the number of ministers by half.

Wearing boys’ clothes and playing football didn’t interest him. He is confused no more and doesn’t try to conform. Eight years after leaving home, Basant, now 24, has transformed to Basanti and is a busy beautician in Kathmandu.

The story, however, is not all that positive for Nepal’s estimated one million plus sexual minority population which includes lesbians, gays, bi-sexuals, trans-gendered and inter-sexed – all clubbed as LGBTIs.

Ireland: Labour Party Leader Promises Constitutional rewrite, Could Open Up Gay Marriage, Abortion Debates

Monday, April 19th, 2010

LABOUR Party leader Eamon Gilmore will re-open the divisive abortion debate through his promise to rewrite the Constitution if he gets into power.

Aside from abortion, Mr Gilmore’s constitutional reform plan would also open up a host of contentious issues like the recognition of God, property rights, the definition of the family, gay marriage and the EU. Any changes to the Constitution would have to be ratified by a referendum.

Following on from Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny’s political reform proposals, such as scrapping the Seanad, Mr Gilmore said he also wanted to see institutional changes – but didn’t say what they should be.
