IA: Democratic Senate Leader Promises to Block Gay Marriage Ban

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Mike GronstalWhile they succeeded in ousting three of Iowa’s seven supreme court justices, NOM will have a hard time pushing forward in any marriage repeal attempt, thanks to state Senate leader Mike Gronstal.

Despite sweeping GOP gains in Iowa government Tuesday, one Democratic senator will thwart efforts to allow Iowans a vote on gay marriage. Republicans will occupy the governor’s office and will control the Iowa House next year, and there’s a chance that final results could give Republicans a 25-25 deadlock in the Iowa Senate.

But Senate Democrats will maintain at least equal power – which will give Majority Leader Mike Gronstal authority to prevent a vote on a marriage amendment to the state constitution.

IA: Gay Marriage Foes to Press GOP to Begin Constitutional Ban Process

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Iowa Gay MarriageEmboldened by the removal of three Iowa Supreme Court justices, gay marriage foes said they plan to press Republicans who took over the governor’s office and the state House to work toward a gay marriage ban.

“We held a court in check, but now we want action from the governor’s office and action from the Legislature,” said Bob Vander Plaats, a Sioux City businessman and former Republican candidate for governor who led the effort to remove the justices.

Chief Justice Marsha Ternus, David Baker and Michael Streit will be removed after about 54 percent of voters backed their ouster Tuesday. They were among the seven justices who unanimously decided last year that an Iowa law restricting marriage to a man and a woman violated the state’s constitution.

AK: GOP Senate Candidate Joe Miller Would Vote for Constitutional Ban on Gay Marriage

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Alaska Senate Candidate Joe MillerRepublican Senate nominee Joe Miller of Alaska said Tuesday he would vote for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. “That’s up to the people,” Miller ultimately said of a constitutional amendment in an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Tuesday night. “If you get a three-quarters vote ratifying – I’d vote for it. I would.”

Previously in the interview – which occurred with Maddow and Miller walking in and out of a building and down escalators before the Republican hopped in the front seat of an SUV mid-questioning – Miller repeatedly touted states’ rights, which seemed to create a contradiction between his hands-off beliefs on federal government and potential support for a constitutional same-sex marriage ban.

“There are different approaches to different values,” Miller said. “It’s really a state issue. It should be handled at the state level.”

HI: GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Wants Stronger Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

Republican gubernatorial candidate James “Duke” Aiona has promised to back an amendment banning gay marriage in the Hawaii Constitution. In 1998, voters approved a constitutional amendment granting the state Legislature the power to reserve marriage as a heterosexual union. Civil unions remain an option. The decision overruled a 1993 Hawaii Supreme Court ruling that favored gay marriage advocates.

Aiona, who currently serves as the state’s lieutenant governor, said if elected he would will propose a constitutional amendment in 2012 to ask voters whether marriage should be defined as a union between one man and one woman, the Star Advertiser reported.

Lawmakers last session narrowly approved a bill that recognizes gay and lesbian couples with civil unions, but Republican Governor Linda Lingle vetoed the measure.

WI: State Supreme Court Upholds Gay Marriage Ban Unanimously

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has upheld Wisconsin’s ban on gay marriage and civil unions. In a 7-0 vote Wednesday morning, the court decided a 2006 constitutional amendment was properly put to voters.

A lawsuit claimed the amendment violated a rule that limits referendums to a single subject. The 2006 ballot asked voters two questions: whether to limit marriage to a man and a woman, and whether to outlaw any similar legal status for unmarried individuals.

The lawsuit, filed by voters opposed to the amendment, argued gay marriage and civil unions are two different subjects. Justice Michael Gableman said both “carry out the same general purpose of preserving the legal status of marriage in Wisconsin as between only one man and one woman.”

MN: GOP & Anti Gay Group to Push for Anti-Gay-Marriage Amendment

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

On Monday, the Minnesota Family Council and several GOP lawmakers held a press conference announcing their intent to push for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships in Minnesota. MFC warned that same-sex marriage could be legal in Minnesota as soon as next year, citing legislation and comments by Sen. John Marty, a candidate for governor. Marty shot back Monday night saying, “I stand by my commitment to equality. We can pass marriage equality legislation and sign it into law next year.”

At the press conference, MFC president Tom Prichard warned of “real dangers to our culture” and said that a bill by Sen. John Marty that would make same-sex marriage legal could become law next year, and to prevent that from happening, Minnesota needs a constitutional amendment.

“What it will do is have a dramatic impact the institution of marriage, right of conscience and freedoms and every aspect of society will be impacted,” said Prichard of same-sex marriage. Rep. Dan Severson, R-Sauk Rapids, said, “This goes to the structure of power of the people of Minnesota. Allowing them to vote on this important issue is fundamental to our society.”
