OR: Constitutional Ban Stands in the Way of Marriage Equality

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Oregon Marriage EqualityWith the political makeup in Washington’s statehouse in favor of same-sex marriage, the state had little trouble getting a gay-marriage bill passed. But in Oregon, lawmakers don’t have the same authority as Washington lawmakers, because in Oregon they are prohibited from pursuing such a change in the law.

The reason goes back eight years to 2004 when Multnomah County began marrying same-sex couples. In response, Oregonians voted to amend the state constitution, declaring Oregon would recognize only marriages between a man and a woman. Ever since then, the Oregon state Legislature has not been legally able to work on the issue.

For Oregon to follow Washington’s lead, the entire state has to vote to undo that constitutional amendment.

MN: Anti Marriage Equality Group Softpeddles Arguments

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Minnesota for MarriageVia a series of You Tube videos – which I refuse to post – the group Minnesota for Marriage is pushing a false image in its fight to keep marriage equality out of the state.

The group has gotten some folks — couples and individuals — to appear on film and talk about what marriage means to them.

Of course, the points they make undercut their argument because it begs the question that if marriage means so much to them, then why are they trying to keep it from others? Why are they trying to keep the stability of marriage from families simply because these particular families are comprised of couples of the same sex?

MN: State Deeply Divided on Marriage Equality Ban

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Minnesota Gay Marriage PollMinnesotans are deeply divided over whether the state Constitution should be amended to define marriage as only the union of a man and woman, according to a Star Tribune Minnesota Poll.

A year before they face the issue on the ballot, 48 percent of Minnesotans favor such an amendment while 43 percent oppose it. That falls within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.

The poll of 807 adults statewide, conducted Nov. 2-3, shows that battle lines will be drawn on clear partisan, generational, educational and geographic fractures.

The Sanctity of Marriage Stupidity

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

When Kim Kardashian revealed her love for laser hair removal, I didn’t care. When she talked about the attention her butt receives, I might have been a little jealous but I still didn’t care.

When she and Kris Humphries divorced 72 days after their wedding, I was insulted. E! Entertainment TV issued a statement about the divorce: “All of us at E! are surprised and saddened by this news, and we send our support to Kim and Kris at this difficult time.”

I was personally surprised and saddened when California passed the gay marriage ban in 2008. At present, 42 state constitutions define marriage as being the union of one man and one woman (see 17-year-old Courtney “Heated Flesh” Stodden and 51-year-old Doug “Tiger in Bed” Hutchinson).

NH: GOP’er Drops Constitutional Ban in Favor of Marriage Equality Repeal

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

New Hampshire Gay Marriage RepealThe sponsor of a constitutional amendment to prohibit gay marriage has decided not to pursue the measure next year to clear the way for a debate over repealing New Hampshire’s law legalizing the unions.

State Rep. David Bates, the Windham Republican who also is sponsor of the repeal bill, told The Associated Press on Tuesday he wants to let the Legislature consider repealing the law enacted under Democrats two years ago before debating a constitutional change — a process that would take longer to implement.

“The bill to change the meaning of marriage back to what it was in statute is well on its way,” Bates said. Bates said he did not want to risk having lawmakers choosing between two measures: the bill and a constitutional amendment.

NC: GOP Compares Marriage Equality to Incest, Polygamy, Calls for Constitutional Ban

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

North Carolina Gay Marriage BanIn a press conference that compared same-sex marriage to “incest” and “polygamy,” Republican leaders in the North Carolina House of Representatives urged their colleagues to pass legislation that would present voters with a constitutional amendment to outlaw same-sex marriages.

The News and Observer reports on the remarks Tuesday in Raleigh by House Speaker Pro Tem Dale Folwell and House Majority Leader Paul “Skip” Stam. The leading Republicans called for the legislature to pass the constitutional amendment when it returns for a special session on September 12.

According to audio provided by On Top, Stam compared same-sex marriage to incest and polygamy when a reporter asked whether the amendment represented intrusion by the government into people’s lives.

Chile: Constitutional Ban on Marriage Equality Introduced

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Members of Chile’s Independent Democrat Union (Union Democrata Independiente) on Thursday will introduce a constitutional amendment that seeks to define marriage as the union of a man and a woman, La Tercera reported.

The move comes 2 days after President Sebastian Pinera sent to Congress a bill that would grant gay and lesbian couples many of the rights and benefits of marriage. The Life Partner Agreement (Acuerdo de Vida en Pareja or AVP) would allow gay and straight couples who have lived together for more than one year to enter the union.

The president signed his bill to the cheers of gay rights activists, but angry leaders of his center-right coalition, which includes the UDI Party, refused to attend the signing ceremony.

US: Rick Santorum Would Push Constitutional Marriage Equality Ban as President

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Rick Santorum doubled down on his backing for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage during an appearance on CNN Wednesday night, staking his claim at the farthest end of the religiously conservative spectrum while simultaneously trying to sound libertarian.

“It’s not that we’re against anybody. People can live the life they want to live,” Santorum insisted. “They can do whatever they want to do in the privacy of their home with respect to that activity.”

But Santorum, who recently announced his campaign for president, used that keep-the-government-out-of-my-life ethos as reason to amend the U.S. Constitution, which he said would defend heterosexual marriage and all of society.

WY: Constitutional Ban on Gay Marriage Does After Missed Procedural Deadline

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Wyoming Gay MarriageA proposed amendment to the Wyoming Constitution that would have banned recognition of same-sex marriages performed in other states, expired Friday when it missed a procedural deadline set in the state House.

However, another measure still pending would change Wyoming law to specify that the state would only recognize a marriage as being between one man and one woman.

There has been contentious debate in both Wyoming’s House and Senate over whether or not same-sex couples who entered civil unions elsewhere would have access to the state’s court system to resolve any issues that arise in their relationships.

WY: It’s Official: GOP to Introduce Constitutional Ban to Marriage Equality

Friday, December 31st, 2010

GOP Rep Owen PetersenTwo Republican lawmakers in Wyoming say they’ll introduce a bill that defines marriage as a heterosexual union in the state’s constitution, the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle reported.

The resolution would ask voters to amend the Wyoming Constitution to define marriage. Similar proposals in 2007 and 2009 failed, but anticipated support from a newly-elected Republican majority in both sides of the Capitol has given supporters new hope.

“It’s about the right of Wyoming voters to vote,” said Republican Senator Curt Meier, a co-sponsor of the legislation. “We’re setting a community standard for Wyoming.”
