Hungary: Abortion, Gay Marriage Constitutional Bans Proposed

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Hungary Gay MarriageUnder pressure from the Vatican, the Hungarian government is planning to introduce a complete ban on abortion and any prospect of legalised gay marriage in its new constitutional proposals.

At a meeting with the pope earlier in December, the Hungarian ambassador was told that it was “desirable that the new constitution be inspired by Christian values, particularly in what concerns the position of marriage and the family in society and the protection of life.” The pontiff’s wishes are reflected well in the governing Fidesz party’s proposal, which – in additional to mirroring papal teaching on abortion – says marriage is “the most natural community of man and woman.”

The pope told the ambassador that “Europe would be finished” if heterosexual marriage were no longer “the norm”. He said: “Europe would no longer be Europe if such a basic cell of the social construct were to disappear or to be substantially changed.”

IN: GOP May Introduce Gay Marriage Constitutional Ban Again in 2011

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Indiana Gay MarriageWhile Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has called for a “truce” on social issues like same-sex marriage, there are some Indiana legislators ready to put up a fight.

Conservative state lawmakers say they expect to reintroduce legislation in the next session that would clear the way for a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Indiana already has a law that bans gay marriage but supporters of a constitutional amendment say it would offer protection against court action.

“I’m all for it,” said State Rep. Wes Culver, R-Goshen, co-author of a bill that was blocked by House Democrat leaders when they were in control. “At the least, it needs to come up for a vote.”

MN: Instead of Marriage Equality, State Now Looks to Constitutional Ban Effort in 2012

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Gay rights activists in Minnesota thought 2012 would be the year they could finally make a serious push for gay marriage in the state, but a surprise Republican takeover of the Legislature has them back on the defensive instead.

Tom Prichard, president of the Minnesota Family Council, said Thursday his group will push for a statewide vote in 2012 to ban gay marriage and civil unions in Minnesota’s Constitution. Previous efforts to do so in 2004, 2005 and 2006 met a firewall in the strongly Democratic state Senate, but that liberal majority crumbled in Tuesday night’s election.

And despite a vow by new Republican legislative leaders to focus primarily on job creation and spending cuts when they take over in January, the likely new chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committe said there’s “a lot of bottled-up desire” in his party to finally put gay marriage before state voters.

Iowa: 77% of Republican Voters Want Gay Marriage on the Ballot

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

A large majority of Iowa Republican primary voters say Iowans should have a chance to vote on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, according to the latest Des Moines Register Iowa Poll.

More than three-quarters of Iowans planning to vote in Tuesday’s Republican primary say Iowans should have a chance to vote on changing the constitution specifically to ban gay marriage.

But the same consensus does not exist for ousting Iowa Supreme Court judges who voted last year to invalidate Iowa’s statutory ban on same-sex marriage. And one-third of the poll respondents say that some Iowans have overreacted on the issue, and that gay marriage in the state is just not that big a deal.
