NY: Counterprotest Senator Diaz’s Anti Marriage Equality Hate Rally Sunday

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

New York Marriage EqualityI just called the Bronx Borough Hall to ask about a location for counter-protesters to gather during Sen. Ruben Diaz’ hate rally this weekend. As some of you may know, the Bronx borough president is Diaz’ son of the same name, Ruben Diaz Jr. The younger Diaz has said that he will not be attending his father’s hate rally as it coincides with the annual Bronx Week celebrations that will take place across the borough.

According to a flack at the elder Diaz’ office, a counter-protesting area will be set up outside the Bronx County Courthouse at 161st Street and Grand Concourse. If you are coming from Manhattan, that’s the 161st Street stop on the 4 train (also the stop for Yankee Stadium.)

The march starts at noon on Sunday at 149th Street and Third Avenue and will presumably reach the Courthouse within thirty minutes. I’ll post more on any counter-protesting efforts as I get the information.

DC: NOM Buses in Supporters to Reach 200 at Final Rally

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

The crowd gathered at the National Organization for Marriage’s rally on the lawn near the U.S. Capitol on Sunday, Aug. 15, grew to about 200 people – mostly because of several buses that arrived carrying supporters of NOM’s message.

Before the arrival of the buses, however, the crowd at NOM’s final stop on its “Summer of Marriage” tour consisted of a mix of those supporting NOM’s rally, same-sex marriage activists countering the rally with protest signs and members of the media.

A little more than a mile away, however, the crowd was larger and unified at The Big Commit – the District’s event organized to counter NOM’s tour stop.

NC: Tens Show Up for NOM Rally in Raleigh

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

I will have much more later, including some incredible blather from the mouth of Brian Brown, who was sweating like a pig out near the Capital Building, surrounded by, as JMG has said, TENS (as in about 45) supporters. We had about 200 on our side, as you’ll see in the slide show. It looked like the journalists and cops together outnumbered the NOMers.

The table with neat stacks of one-man, one-woman T-Shirts was left unmonitored a good bit of the time because there were customers buying the crap. Guess it’s back onto the bus to try hawking them in another city.

On the video he was into the whole victimhood thing, spouting how the people standing peacefully on the other side of the street were “shouting him down” and impinging on his free speech rights. You’ll also see video later of a local yokel bigot hysterical over same-sex marriage destroying society.

GA: NOM Attracts 35 People in Atlanta; 300 Counterprotest Across the Street

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

“Redefining marriage” by allowing gay couples to legally wed amounts to “genocide” and will lead to the “extinction” of the human race, the niece of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. argued on the steps of the Georgia Capitol today. The National Organization for Marriage brought its national road tour to Atlanta on Saturday, but once again, supporters of the group that fights against gay marriage were vastly outnumbered by a counter-protest for LGBT equality.

The lopsided numbers were typical for NOM’s “Summer of Marriage” tour, which has drawn low attendance on other stops as well. In Atlanta, only about 35 people – including their speakers, performers, volunteers and the media – converged in front of the state capitol.

Across the street on the sidewalk in front of Central Presbyterian Church, close to 300 people gathered with signs supporting marriage equality for gay couples. The “counter witness” followed a rally earlier at Woodruff Park for same-sex marriage supporters.

IA: Gay Marriage Supporters Outnumber NOM Tour Attendees in Sioux City

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Let’s just point out the obvious: the National Organization for Marriage could take a few lessons in community organizing from the LGBT community and our allies.

As NOM’s Summer for Marriage tour made its 15th stop today in Sioux City, Iowa, according to a hand count from our friends at NOMTourTracker, 53 NOM supporters gathered in a parking lot (for the third time on this tour!) for yet another “One Man, One Woman” marriage rally.

Meanwhile, One Iowa continued its successful five city “Stand Proud, Vote Proud” tour in Sioux City, as 64 supporters of equality celebrated Iowa’s inclusion of all families.
